BRENNAN, CORNELIUS ALFRED FS(N) R117600. From Verdun, Quebec. Killed in Action Aug 13/43 age 21. #218 Gold Coast Squadron (In Time). Target – Turin, Italy. This was FS Brennan’s 21st operation and he was killed by machine gun fire from the rear turret of the Stirling flying just ahead of him. Stirling aircraft #EF 452 was badly damaged and the RAF pilot, FS A. Aaron, was mortally wounded but lived long enough to give the Canadian navigator, F/O A. Larden, flight instructions to fly from Turin to Bone, Algeria. FS Aaron received the Victoria Cross for his bravery. FS Alan Larden, of North Bay, Ontario, made a safe landing at Bone even though there was a 4,000 lb. bomb hung up in the bomb bay. FS Larden received the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal for his efforts. Flight Sergeant Navigator Brennan is buried in the War Cemetery at Bone, Algeria.

Wellington aircraft R72563 was shot down at Ahaus, Germany. P/O G.C. Goold and WO L.J. Lemoine were also killed. Two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Warrant Officer Class I Observer Brichta is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany. Addendum: –  Distinguished Flying Medal – No.419 Squadron – Award effective 16 June 1942 as per London Gazette dated 22 September 1942 and AFRO 1653/42 dated 16 October 1942. Enlisted in Toronto, 12 August 1940. Trained at No.5 ADS, No.4 BGS, and No.1 ANS. Killed in Action 16 September 1942 while on the strength of No.22 OTU; buried in Germany. Medal presented (not clear to whom) at Buckingham Palace, 22 April 1944. The citation reads – “This airman is an observer of exceptional merit. Throughout his operational tour he has displayed both efficiency and coolness which has been of the greatest assistance to his captain. One night in June 1942, during an attack against Essen, his aircraft was damaged by anti-aircraft fire. It was also attacked by an enemy fighter. The underside of the fuselage from the front turret to the observer’s table caught fire but in spite of the imminent danger to the whole crew and the possibility that he would fall through the badly burned bottom of the fuselage, Flight Sergeant Brichta immediately attempted to extinguish the flames. His subsequent accurate navigation played a large part in the eventual safe return of his aircraft to this country. Flight Sergeant Brichta’s courage and coolness in the face of danger has at all times been of a high order. BRIFETT, GEORGE WILLIAM SGT(AG) R108275. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed in Action Dec 21/43 age 21. #427 Lion Squadron (Ferte Manus Certas). Target – Frankfurt, Germany. BRIGDEN, DONALD ANDREW F/O(P) J24901. From Carman, Manitoba. Killed in Action Jan 1/45 age 21. #442 Caribou Squadron. F/O Brigden was killed when he crashed trying to land his Spitfire aircraft #MK 420. The Spitfire had been damaged in action over Venlo, Holland. F/O Brigden’s home airfield was under heavy enemy attack at the time. This was part of the big enemy attack on New Year’s day against all the major Allied aerodromes in the area. Flying Officer Pilot Brigden is buried in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Nijmegen, Holland.

BRIGGS, FRANCIS EVAN ROBERT S/L(P) C199. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed Sep 13/41 age 28. RCAF Station, Rockcliffe, Ontario. – Test and Developrnent. S/L Briggs and F/L W. Richards dive testing a Harvard aircraft when they crashed four miles south-east of the aerodrome at Uplands. S/L Briggs was the officer commanding test flights involving the testing of new equipment in planes used in the RCAF and he also did considerable active research in aeronautical engineering. He worked with Sir Frederick Ranting and Professor C.H. Rest (co-discoverers of insulin) on problems of high altitude flying. He wore and tested a flying suit especially designed to prevent pilots from blacking out at extreme force of gravity when pulling a plane out of dives at high speed. S/L Briggs also worked with members of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, Mass. for two months on a secret radio location device, for use in turning back enemy planes. Squadron Leader Pilot Briggs is buried in the Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

Shortly after this F/O Brosko was taken in charge by a member of the Gendarmerie, a Lieutenant Kramer who took him in a car and on the road took him out of the car, shot him and threw him into a ditch along side the road. Pegg bailed out and was taken Prisoner of War. 0.Lt Geiger was a German night fighter ace credited with destroying 53 four engine aircraft. He was killed on Sep 29/43. Ex P/O Pegg of Oxbow, Saskatchewan had this to say about the trip, “We were hit by a night fighter so bad that Doug Brown ordered a bail out. I grabbed the escape hatch on the floor and jumped with two guys right behind me ready to go. No one else got out, and I don’t know why, as Doug kept the aircraft fairly level when I got out. I landed O.K. and the Lanc. crashed a mile from me which was just over a mile north of Arnhem. We had an extra navigator on board for experience. This was not usual, as pilots usually went along for their first trip. All seven of my crew were buried in a small cemetery in Arnhem. P/O Brown’s parents had his remains moved to the Groesbeek Canadian Cemetery.” Pilot Officer Pilot Brown was buried in the Moscowa Cemetery, Arnhem, Holland, exhumed, and reburied in the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Nijmegen, Holland.

BROWN, MARK HENRY (HILLY) W/C(P) 37904 D.F.C. & BAR, C.G., MM., M.G. – Royal Air Force. From MacGregor, Manitoba. Killed in Action Nov 21/41 age 29. #249 Squadron (Pugnis Et Calcibus). Awarded the French Croix de Guerre, the Czechoslovakian Military Medal and Military Cross. W/C. Brown was killed when his Hurricane aircraft was hit by flak during a sweep over Sicily. He was the Commanding Officer of #1 Squadron during the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain; he was an ace, credited with destroying eighteen and one half enemy aircraft. W/C. Brown and F/O Allan Angus D.F.C. from McCreary, Manitoba were both aces in May, 1940. This was a time of confusion for all squadrons in the Battle of France and many records were lost. These two Manitobans tied for being the first Canadians to become aces in W.W.II. A special dedication service was held at the school in MacGregor, Manitoba in 1982, with plaques, pictures, and original uniforms of W/C. Brown. One special guest was S/L Roland Dibnah D.F.C. of Winnipeg, Manitoba, the only surviving member of #1 RAF Squadron, who flew with P/O Brown in the Battle of France. P/O Dibnah was shot down in May, 1940 and missing so S/L P. Halahan wrote the Dibnah family in Winnipeg saying, “I’m sure your son is alright and I’ve recommended him for the D.F.C. for his superb fighting.” In 1980 S/L Roland Dibnah’s mother died, Roland found the original letter and sent it to RAF Headquarters in London, England. He received his D.F.C. – 40 years after the recommendation. He too was an ace with 9 enemy aircraft to his credit and flew all during the war but was never decorated.
