FS Nabors was killed when his Hurricane aircraft #P 5458 spun into the ground, from 6,000 feet, at Broomknow Farm, Scotland. He had been slightly injured on June 2, 1942 at #4 E.F.T.S., Windsor Mills, Quebec, when Fleet Finch aircraft #4459 made a forced landing and turned over in a muddy field near Pressisville, Quebec. Flight Sergeant Pilot Nabors is buried in the Western Necropolis, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

NADEAU, FRANCIS GABRIEL SGT(WAG) R54993. From Port Daniel Station, Quebec. Killed in Action Nov 13/41 age 22. #148 Squadron (Trusty). Wellington aircraft failed to return from operations. Four members of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Nadeau has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Alamein War Memorial, Egypt.

WO Nadeau was killed when his Spitfire aircraft #X 4821 was in a mid-air collision before it crashed at Bangor, lsycoed, Flintshire. Warrant Officer Class II Pilot Nadeau is buried in the Blacon Cemetery, Chester, Cheshire, England.

NADEAU, JOSEPH ROGER EMILE FS(AG) R81864. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed in Action Dec 4/43 age 21. #76 Squadron (Resolute). Target – Leipzig, Germany. Please see Lowe 1.M. for casualty list and flight detail. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Nadeau is buried in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg, Germany.

NADEAU, LAURENT JOSEPH ONESIME P/O(WAG) J16486//R62660. From Cornwall, Ontario. Killed in Action Aug 3/42 age 23. #405 City of Vancouver Squadron (Ducimus). Halifax aircraft missing during an attack against Dusseldorf, Germany on July 31, 1942. P/O Nadeau was a Prisoner of War and died in the Field Hospital, St. Gilleia, Brussels. Sgts H.L. Cox, one RAF, and one RNZAF member of the crew were also killed. Three Canadians, P/O Wm. R. Bandeen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, P/O Wm. R. Howard of Milestone, Saskatchewan, and P/O Don E. West of Edmonton, Alberta were taken Prisoners of War. Wm. Bandeen, now of Victoria, British Columbia says, ‘We were hit on our return trip by a night fighter at about 20,000 feet. I was the navigator and knew our Welch rear air gunner was killed outright. P/O West, the pilot, ordered a bail out. Everything was happening so fast as we got out that I didn’t know exactly who didn’t get out.” There were two #405 Sqdn. aircraft lost in the same area on this date. Following are the names of those airmen, not Canadians, who were also killed; Sgts J. Hunter (RAF), J.F. O’Brien (RAF), I. Waters (RAF), S. Woodman (RAF), F.C. Bond (RAF), and W.A.B. Laughlin (RAF). NADON, JOSEPH EDWARD GILLES LAC(OB) R95658 – under training. From Ottawa, Ontario. Killed Jan 4/42 age 22. #9 Air Observers School, St. Jean, Quebec. BROTHER to Joseph Y.J. Nadon. LAC Nadon was killed when his automobile stalled on a level crossing and was hit by a CPR train at Westboro, Ontario. Sgt J.Y.J. Nadon and Sgt Nadon’s wife were also killed. NADON, JOSEPH YVES JULIEN SGT 10094. From Ottawa, Ontario. Killed Jan 4/42 age 24. RCAF Station, Trenton, Ontario. BROTHER to Joseph Edward G. Nadon. Flying Officer Bomb Aimer Nafziger was buried at Hurth, Germany, exhumed, and reburied in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.

NAGLEY, ARTHUR HAROLD F/L(P) J23075//R77400. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed Apr 19/45 age 22. #5 Operational Training Unit. Two Beaufighter aircraft were in a mid-air collision whilst practising a formation attack against the target ship Pinnace. Aircraft #RD 486 disintegrated when it hit the water and all that was found by air-sea rescue and the target ship was some aircraft wreckage and two partially inflated dinghies. One crew member, not Canadian, was also killed. The crew of the other aircraft were uninjured. NAIRN, ROSS BELL P/O(AG) J89037//R184597. From St. Marys, Ontario. Killed in Action Aug 26/44 age 21. #405 City of Vancouver Squadron (Ducimus), Pathfinder Force. Lancaster aircraft #PB 233 was returning from a raid against Russelheim, Germany, when an enemy fighter aircraft shot up the rear fuselage, the tail plane, and the starboard mainplane with cannon fire. The aircraft returned safely but three of the crew, including P/O Nairn, bailed out over enemy territory contrary to the captain’s instructions. One Canadian, F/L Brown was taken Prisoner of War. One of the crew, not Canadian, missing believed killed. Penn were on an instrument flying training exercise and were killed when Harvard aircraft 4 3115 went into a spin and crashed one mile south of Canfield, Ontario Flying Officer Pilot Naismith is buried in St. James’ Cemetery, Orillia, Ontario.

LAC Najemnik was on a solo flight in Fleet Finch aircraft #4651 when he jumped out of the aircraft, cause obscure. Leading AirCraftman Pilot Najemnik is buried in the Wood Lawn Cemetery at Forest Park, Illinois, U.S.A.

NAPIER, STANLEY GILBERT FS(P) R69243. From Capreol, Ontario. Killed in Action Apr 12/42 age 25. #417 City Of Windsor Squadron (Supporting Liberty And Justice). FS Napier was flying Spiff ire aircraft BL 643 when it went down in the middle of the English Channel, caused by enemy action. Air-sea rescue arrived too late to save him. Flight Sergeant Pilot Napier is buried in the New Cemetery, Folkestone, Kent, England.

NAPPER, RICHARD SIDNEY AC1 10188A. From Hamilton, Ontario. Killed in Action Mar 9/40 age 26. #119 City of Hamilton Squadron (Noll Me Tangere). AC1 Napper was acting as aircrew and was struck by the airscrew of Norseman 4 697 at RCAF Station, Vancouver, British Columbia. AirCraftman First Class Napper is buried in the Woodland Cemetery, Hamilton, Ontario.

NARUM, CHESTER RUSSELL P/O(P) J876361/R159116. From Rosemary, Alberta. Killed in Action Mar 31/44 age 23. #432 Leaside Squadron (Saevitir Ad Lucem). Halifax aircraft #LW 682 was shot down by an ME-110 fighter aircraft, flown by German Lt Becker, during a night attack against Nuremberg, Germany. P/Os S. Saprunoff and R.W. Rathwell were also killed. Three Canadians, FSs R.P. Goeson, Marini and Pigeon were taken Prisoners of War and one crew member, not Canadian, missing believed killed. This was P/O Narum’s 5th op. and his was one of 108 Allied aircraft lost this night. Pilot Officer Pilot Narum is buried in the War Cemetery, Heverlee, Brabant, Belgium.

Wellington aircraft flew into the side of a hill three miles south-east of Cabrach, Scotland. Sgt G.H. Wynne (RAF) and three other RAF airmen were also killed. Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Navey is buried in the Lossiemouth Burial Ground, Drainie, Morayshire, Scotland.

NAVIN, DONALD JOSEPH FS(WAG) R78543. From London, Ontario. Killed in Action Aug 10/42 age 21. #78 Squadron (Nemo Non Paratus). Halifax aircraft missing since take-off. FS A.C. Porter was also killed and five RAF members of the crew missing believed killed. NAYLOR, RALPH EDWARD F/L(P) J4550. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed Mar 26/45 age 28. #418 City of Edmonton Squadron. Mosquito aircraft #PZ 485 was en route from Gilze Rijen, Holland to Coxyde, Belgium when it crashed twelve miles south-west of Eindhoven, Holland, F/L Naylor was the sole occupant of the aircraft. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Naylor is buried in the Canadian Cemetery, Nijmegen, Holland.

NAZAR, PETER F/O(BA) J27731//R108747. From Sudbury, Ontario. Killed in Action May 25/44 age 26. #429 Bison Squadron (Fortunae Nihil). Halifax aircraft #HX 352 missing during night operations against Aachen, Germany. WO J.I. MacDonald, P/O J.L. Michell, F/O D. McKenzie, Sgts J.I. Jolley (RAF), and A.N. Smith (RAF) were also killed. One Canadian, F/O H.D. LaPointe was taken Prisoner of War at Stalag Luft 7. Flying Officer Bomb Aimer Nazar was buried at St. Trond, Belgium, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery, Heverlee, Brabant, Belgium.

NAZARKO, WALTER LAC R191412 – armourer. From Hazelridge, Manitoba. Killed Nov 28/44 age 21. #61 Base, RCAF Station, Topcliffe, Yorkshire. LAC, Nazarko was killed when 75 one and one half inch signal cartridges accidentally caught fire and exploded. Leading AirCraftman Nazarko is buried in the Stonefall Cemetery, Wetherby Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England.

NEAL, DONALD ALEXANDER SGT(P) R64890. From Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Killed Sep 13/41 age 22. #13 Operational Training Unit. Sgt Neal was on a training exercise and was killed when he crashed in his Hurricane aircraft near Brackley, Northamptonshire, England. Sergeant Pilot Neal is buried in the St. Laurence Churchyard, Caversfield, Oxfordshire, England.

NEAL, FRANCIS JOHN FS(P) R123716. From St. Vital, Manitoba. Killed in Action Oct 7/43 age 21. #426 Thunderbird Squadron (On Wings of Fire). Lancaster aircraft #DS 689 was shot up by enemy fighter aircraft during an attack against Stuttgart, Germany. The Lancaster caught fire and two of the crew bailed out over Wassy, France and they reported that the aircraft crashed near them. Two Canadians, P/Os M.B. Summers, J. Wilde, G. Davies (RAF), P.E. Newland (RAF), and Sgt G.E. Aldous (RAF) were all killed in the aircraft. One Canadian, F/O E.M. Beaton, and one RAF crew member were the two who had bailed out and they were Evaders. There was an extra pilot on board to gain operational experience. Flight Sergeant Pilot Neal is buried in the Churchyard at Rachecourt-Sur-Blaise, Haute- Marne, France,

NEAL, RONALD CHARLES FS R76883 – radio mechanic. From Edmonton, Alberta. Died Jun 2/45 age 28. LAC Neal embarked the United Kingdom on December 4, 1941 on Athlone Castle and transhipped to South Africa on the ship City of Canterbury. He arrived in Batavia and was paid on February 10, 1942, there was no further record of him due to the unsettled conditions there. He was taken Prisoner of War by the Japanese on March 8, 1942 and died as a prisoner on June 2, 1945 at P.O.W. Camp, Raha Moena, Ambon Island. Flight Sergeant Neal is buried in the Macassar War Cemetery, Celebes Island, Indonesia.

Beaufort aircraft #JM 499 missing enroute from Portreath to Ras El Ma, the Middle East. F/O G. Rattee and WO J.L. Perkins were also killed. One airman, not Canadian, missing believed killed. All six other members of the crew bailed out but F/O Nevins and one other airman, not Canadian, are believed to have slipped out of their parachute harness when the parachute opened and were killed on impact, there were no other casualties. Sqdn., Can/R74646 Sgt Arthur William Nichols, R.C.A.F., No. 405 (R.C.A.F.) Sqdn. (Vancouver). One night in November, 1942 Sgts Symes and Nichols were the pilot and engineer respectively of an aircraft engaged on anti-submarine patrol duties. On the return journey engine trouble developed and Sgt Symes was compelled to make an emergency landing. In so doing the aircraft struck a hut and burst into flames. All the crew, with the exception of the wireless operator, who was trapped by the legs, managed to extricate themselves. Knowing that the petrol tanks might explode at any moment, Sgts Symes and Nichols re-entered the blazing aircraft and succeeded in extricating the wireless operator; a few seconds later the petrol tanks exploded. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by these sergeants undoubtedly saved their comrade’s life. Pilot Officer Flight Engineer Nichols is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.

NORMAN, ERNEST ALBERT FS(WAG) R78909. From Wallaceburg, Ontario. Killed in Action Apr 5/43 age 21. #21 Squadron (Viribus Vincimus). Ventura aircraft #AE 726 had the tail shot off by flak in the vicinity of the target. WO T.C. Dubose, FS K.E. Price, and Sgt H.E. Blundell (RAF) were also killed. Twelve Ventura’s refueled at their advance base and took off for an attack against an oil tanker in the Harbour at Brest, France, they were screened by Spitfires from 10 Group. On final approach to Brest a swarm of German FW-190 aircraft ambushed them. A fierce battle ensued. Intrepid Luftwaffe pilots were little worried by the heavy anti-aircraft fire which always welcomed the RAF to Brest, and soon downed a Ventura. The others pressed on, their bombs falling alongside the ship. A large explosion was seen. Then came the return journey. The German aircraft held off over the docks but were ready to pounce again, British fighters having been placed to high to protect the bombers. As the Ventura’s headed home one was ablaze and came down in the water. Although evasive action was good the Venturas could not escape. Forty miles off the Lizard another crashed into the sea and a fourth came down off Portreath, this crew was lucky to survive. Eight of the twelve Ventura’s returned. Mosquito aircraft #RS 532 took off from Melsbroek, Belgium for a night patrol over the Wilhelmshaven and Bremen area of Germany. The aircraft crashed at Schoonebeek, Holland, both occupants had bailed out but were too low for their parachutes to open. The RAF navigator, WO J.A. Haugh was also killed. Flying Officer Pilot Nowell is buried in the General Cemetery at Oud Schoonebeek, Schoonebeek, Drenthe, Holland.

NOWLAN, JOSEPH HENRI YVON P/O(AG) J87120//R99181. From Moncton, New Brunswick. Killed in Action Jun 11/44 age 24. #434 Bluenose Squadron (In Excelsis Vincimus). Target – Versailles, France. Pilot Officer Air Gunner Nowlan was buried at Jouy En Josas, France, exhumed, and reburied in the New Communal Cemetery, Viroflay, Seine-et-Oise, France.

NOWOSAD, AUGUST P/O(OB) J7649. From Vonda, Saskatchewan. Killed Oct 25/41 age 25. #31 Operational Training Unit, Debert, Nova Scotia. The crew of Hudson aircraft #AM 886 were on a cross-country training flight when they crashed at the lower end of Big Tupper Lake, Altamount, Franklin County, New York, U.S.A. P/O T. Shellshear and Sgt D.R. Gill were also killed. Pilot Officer Observer Nowosad is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

NUGENT, CHARLES GERARD FS(WAG) R64912. From Salisbury, New Brunswick. Killed in Action Oct 1/42 age 22. #44 Rhodesia Squadron (Fulmina Regis lusta). Lancaster aircraft went down over Denmark, presumed enemy action. Six RAF crew members, Sgts N.E. Dowden, FSs P. Hereford, H.R. Rowe, R.E.W. Williamson, F/O J.D.V.S. Stephens D.F.C., D.F.M., and F/O J.E. Tate were also killed. Flight Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Nugent is buried in the Fourfelt Cemetery, Esbjerg, Jutland, Denmark.

NUGENT, WILLIAM ARNOLD F/O C5384 – administration. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed Oct 16/42 age 45. #1 Service Flying Training School, Camp Borden, Ontario. F/O Nugent, Sgts R.I. Davis (RAF), and E.L. Eaves (RAF) were engaged in a formation low-flying exercise when the starboard wing hit. They were all killed when Anson aircraft #7550 rolled and crashed at Fox Island, Ontario. Flying Officer Nugent is buried in St. John’s Norway Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

NUSSBAUM, LAMBERT RICHARD F/O(BA) J7800. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed in Action Jun 29/43 age 26. #424 Tiger Squadron  (Castigandos Castigamus). Wellington aircraft missing. NUSSEY, DOUGLAS RICHARD KYRKE F/O(P) J43333//R207038. From Hudson Heights, Quebec. Killed Dec 31/44 age 20. #41 Operational Training Unit. F/O Nussey lost his life when his Hurricane aircraft #LF 369 crashed four hundred yards off shore, one mile north of Flint, Scotland. Flying Officer Pilot Nussey has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.

NUTIK, LOUIS WO2(WAG) R94118. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed in Action May 1/43 age 20. #7 Squadron (Per Diem Per Noctum), Pathfinder Force. Stirling aircraft #R 9263 went down over Holland during operations. P/O E.C. Hallding, FS H. Sobel, Sgts A.E. Emms (RAF), N.A. Peachy (RAF), and P/O G. Wragge (RAF) were also killed. One other member of the crew, not Canadian, missing believed killed. WO Nutik had completed over thirty trips and had begun a second tour of operations when he was killed. Warrant Officer Class II Wireless Operator Air Gunner Nutik is buried in the Akkerwoude Protestant Churchyard, Friesland, Holland.

NUTTER, JOHN VINCENT P/O(P) J12476//R108442. From Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed in Action Aug 11/42 age 26. #1 General Reconnaissance Squadron, Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Anson aircraft #AX 168 failed to return from a routine navigational exercise over the Gulf of St. Lawrence. P/O LE. Burley, AC E.C. Senior (RAF), and Sgt S.B. Llewlyn-Roberts (RAF) were also killed. Pilot Officer Pilot Nutter has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Ottawa War Memorial, Ottawa, Ontario.

NUTTER, RICHARD ERIC P/O(N) J17555. From London, Ontario. Killed Jun 29/43 age 29. #1659 Heavy Conversion Unit. Halifax aircraft #DT 553 was on its take-off run, at RCAF Station, Topcliffe, Yorkshire, when the port outer engine failed. The aircraft could not gain sufficient speed to take off so the pilot crash landed the Halifax straight ahead two miles north-west of Harrowby, Yorkshire. One airman, not Canadian, was also killed. Pilot Officer Navigator Nutter is buried in the Dishforth Cemetery, Yorkshire, England.
