Lowe were on an instrument flying cross­country training exercise and were both killed when Harvard aircraft # 2553 crashed at Westbrook, near Kingston, Ontario. LEVY-DESPAS, GUY ANDRE F/O(P) J5044//R56408. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed In Action Jul.9/42 age 20. #126 Squadron (Foremost In Attack). F/O. Levy-Despas served as F/O. Carlet, was awarded the French Legion of Honor and the French Croix de Guerre. He was killed when his Spitfire aircraft was lost to enemy action. Lewis was flying Fleet Finch aircraft# 4410, was practising forced landings and crashed near St. Marthe, Quebec on May 26, 1941. He succumbed to his injuries while in the Neurological Hospital, Montreal, Quebec. Leading AirCraftman Pilot Lewis is buried in the Cote des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec.

Death due to anesthesia while in the Station Hospital at Souris, Manitoba. Leading AirCraftman Lewis is buried in the Archibald Cemetery, Manitou, Manitoba.

LEWIS, EDWARD JOHN LAC R53031. From Toronto, Ontario. Died Jun.7/41 age 25. #401 Ram Squadron (Mors Celerrima Hostibus). Died while in the Rauceby Hospital, England from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Leading AirCraftman Lewis is buried in the Scopwick Church Burial Ground, Scopwick, Lincolnshire, England.

LEWIS, FRANK EDWARD F/O(N) J10317 D.F.C. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed In Action Sep.4/43 age 22. #7 Squadron (Per Diem Per Noctum), Pathfinder Force. F/O. Lewis had completed over thirty trips and had begun his second tour when his Lancaster aircraft # JA 854 was shot down at St. Thegonnec, France during a night trip to Berlin, Germany. WO. B.E. Lindsay was also killed. Five of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. F/O. Lewis had been wounded by enemy fire on December 4, 1942 and his #7 Squadron Stirling aircraft crash landed two miles north-east of Friston, England. He was shot down in a #7 Squadron Stirling aircraft over France on December 22, 1942 but escaped through Spain. According to enemy records F/O. Lewis was buried at St. Thegonnec but burial particulars were never ascertained. LEWIS, GERALD EDWIN FS(AG) R85962. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed In Action Oct.15/42 age 21. #405 City of Vancouver Squadron (Ducimus). Halifax aircraft missing during a raid against Cologne, Germany. FS.s A.G. Lee, J.A. Longley, L. Lowe, F/O. M.M. Tomlinson, Sgt.s I. Arbuckle, and A.V. Milot were also killed. Wellington aircraft # X 3225 was seen to be on fire before it crashed four miles north of the Isle of Jura, Scotland. One crew member, not Canadian, was also killed. LEWIS, GLEN EDWIN FS(OB) R133341. From St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. Killed In Action Jul.4/43. #432 Leaside Squadron (Saevitir Ad Lucem). The crew of a Wellington aircraft were returning from the target when their aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed into a house near Henhurst, Kent, England. P/O. J.W. Baker and one of the crew, not Canadian, were also killed. Flight Sergeant Observer Lewis was buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England. His body was exhumed and moved by American authorities and the present place of burial is not available.

Gray were on a navigation exercise and were all killed when their Anson aircraft # 6016 crashed near Rivers. Sergeant Observer Lewis is buried in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

Halifax aircraft# JD 109 missing, presumed over the target, presumed enemy action. Three of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed and three others of the crew, not Canadians, were missing believed killed. LEWIS, JAMES FREDERICK BYNG LAC(P) 644842 – Royal Air Force. From Morden, Manitoba. Killed In Action Apr.14/40 age 21. #40 Squadron (Hostem A Coelo Expellere). BROTHER to David Earl Lewis. LAC. Lewis took a Blenheim aircraft on a solo flight to Norway and did not return. He had a Canadian pilot’s license but didn’t take it with him when he joined the pre-war RAF. Due to his poor financial situation he was almost forced to join the RAF – but as groundcrew with a promise to remuster to aircrew. The war started and all trades were frozen. He was frustrated in his attempts to remuster after returning from France to the United Kingdom. LAC. Lewis took off in a Blenheim to prove he could fly. He did some low flying over the Officers Mess at lunch time before setting off for Norway. One witness to the event was S/L George D. Hill of Lucky Lake Saskatchewan and now of Kelowna, British Columbia. LEWIS, JAMES MILFORD P/O(P) J18274. From Gurneyville, Alberta. Killed In Action Aug.18/43 age 21. #61 Squadron (Per Puram Tunantes). Lancaster aircraft# ED 661 missing, presumed over the target, presumed enemy action. P/O. R. Bradley was also killed and five of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Lewis was the pilot of Hurricane aircraft# BO 956 and was flying low in bad weather. He was killed when his aircraft crashed into a hillside and burned at Kingsmill Down near, Bradbourne, Kent. LEWIS, RAYMOND DAVID FS(AG) R115799. From Melfort, Saskatchewan. Killed In Action Apr.10/43 age 22. #1661 Conversion Unit. Lancaster aircraft # ED 823 crashed at Hallam, Nottinghamshire. LEWIS, RAYMOND GRANT F/O(P) 41852 M.i.D. Royal Air Force. From Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. Killed In Action Feb.5/41 age 22. #1 Squadron (In Omnibus Princeps) F/O. Lewis lost his life when his Hurricane aircraft failed to return from operations. He-had fought in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain and had destroyed four enemy aircraft. He had been shot down over the English Channel on May 12, 1940 and had to bail out as his engine was on fire. Lewis was on a training flight in Typhoon aircraft # EK 432 and the undercarriage door was seen to break away when the aircraft was in a steep dive. The Typhoon continued in the dive and he was killed when it struck the ground at the edge of Dunsfolm aerodrome, England. LEWTHWAITE, GEORGE ALEXANDER P/O(N) J37164. From Outremont, Quebec. Killed Jul.24/44 age 30. #1666 Heavy Conversion Unit. Halifax aircraft # JD 372 had suffered battle damage during the operation, was returning home and flying at 7,000 feet when the starboard outer engine caught fire. The aircraft spiralled down in flames and crashed one half mile south-east of Slingsby, Yorkshire. FS. D.F. Dittmer, P/O.s A.D. Moffat, F.H. Green, Sgt.s A.C. Reynolds, J.M. LEYLAND, JOHN WILLIAM FS(WAG) R80045. From Petersfield, Manitoba. Killed In Action Aug.30/42 age 28. #5 Operational Training Unit. Beaufort aircraft # L 4497 crashed at Goat Fell, Arran, Scotland. LIBBY, OTIS WILFRID SGT(AG) R204842. From New Westminster, British Columbia. Killed Jun.17/44 age 18. #3 Lancaster Finishing School. Lancaster aircraft # ED 376 crashed near Southery, Norfolk, England. F/O.s R.R. Whitby, D.R. Gilchrist, F/O. P.H. Duval, Sgt. A.K. Hrychenko, and two of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Sergeant Air Gunner Libby is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.

LIDDELL, ARTHUR GEORGE WILLIAM FS(AG) R195410. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed In Action Aug.5/44. #148 Squadron (Trusty) Halifax aircraft # JP 276 did not return from a secret operation at night over South Poland. F/L. A.A. Blynn, FS. C.B. Wylie, P/O. G.A. Chapman, F/O H.L. Brown, and three RAF airmen were also killed. There were two #148 Squadron aircraft lost the same night in the same area. Please see Beanland C.A. for the details of the other aircraft and the names of the others killed in both aircraft. 23 aircraft attempted to fly arms to reinforce the uprising in Warsaw but only 12 made it to the target. Six were shot down, most of them by Russian fighter aircraft. The Russian forces had advanced and stopped just short of Warsaw and told the Polish underground General to rise up and attack the German occupying forces. This they did for 2 months while the Russian forces never moved – hoping the non Communist Polish underground army of 40,000 would be destroyed. They nearly all were. On August 14, 1944 a similar raid took place and another 11 aircraft were shot down. This cemetery contains the graves of 7 Canadians, 62 British, 40 South Africans, and 15 Polish airmen all killed as a result of this bizarre operation. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Liddell is buried in the Military Cemetery at Cracow, Poland.

Logan had been interned in Portugal on November 24, 1943 after the aircraft he was on became lost due to bad weather, ran out of fuel and made a forced landing on the beach near Santa Cruz, Portugal. WO. Logan returned to the United Kingdon on December 29, 1943. He had also been slightly injured on August 26, 1943 in a Beaufort aircraft accident at Firth of Clyde. His aircraft was hit twice by anti-aircraft fire and P/O. Loving was forced to dive down to 50 ft. to evade the fire attack. His gunners succeeded in extinguishing two searchlights, and from this low altitude, in the glare of other searchlights, he released his bombs.
