Mosquito aircraft #KA 109 lost between Tezada Island and Lusqueti Island. FS W.M. Turnbull was also killed. MIDDLETON, DOUGLAS DAVIDSON F/L(P) 39105 – Royal Air Force. From Dauphin Manitoba. Killed in Action Jul 20/40 age 26. #9 Squadron (Per Noctem Volamus). Wellington aircraft failed to return from operations. Five of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. This was F/L Middleton’s nineteenth trip. F/L D.D. Middleton and his two brothers Bruce and Donald were the only three Canadian brothers to join the RAF pre war. Donald Middleton was shot down on April 12, 1940 with F/L W. Donaldson of Lethbridge, Alberta in a #50 Squadron Hampden aircraft off Norway and both were Prisoners of War for over 5 years. Bruce Middleton was a Wing Commander, earned the A.F.C. in the RCAF, and was in charge of all mail deliveries to and from Canada during the war. Don’s aircraft was found by Norwegian divers in the early 1980s and was put into a museum in Norway. F/L Middleton spent most of his 5 years as a Prisoner in Colditz Castle. Lancaster aircraft #NG 363 missing during night operations against Munich, Germany. P/Os L.A. Gauthier, F.W. Bradley, and F/O C.J. Clarke were also killed. One Canadian, F/O Coldwell, was taken Prisoner of War and two of the crew, not Canadians, were missing believed killed. MIETTINEN, VEIKKO VICTOR F/O(P) J18842. From Cobalt, Ontario. Killed Jul 31/44 age 28. #282 Squadron. Warwick aircraft #HF 980 was undergoing an air test when the port engine cut out on take-off. The aircraft crashed at Advistow Moor, Cornwall, England. WO J. McBeth and two members of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. MIFFLIN, FREDERICK MANUEL F/O(P) 155486 D.F.C. – Royal Air Force. From Catalina, Newfoundland. Killed in Action Apr 27/44 age 22. #106 Squadron (Pro Libertate). Lancaster aircraft missing during a raid against Schweinfurt, Germany. F/O Mifflin maintained control of the aircraft and sacrificed himself so that his crew could bail out to safety; this was his thirtieth operation. WO N. Jackson, the RAF flight engineer, tried to put out a fire in the starboard wing, bailed out, was taken Prisoner of War and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his action in fighting the fire. Halifax aircraft #JB 790 was shot down at Gurgsteinfurt, Westphalia during an attack against Bochum, Germany. Five Canadians, F/L G.R. Large, Sgts Rayment, N. Bainblaft, Forest, and A.D. Hutchinson were taken Prisoners of War. One of the crew, not Canadian, missing believed killed. F/L Large died as a P.O.W. Flying Officer Bomb Aimer Milburn was buried in the Evangelical Cemetery at Gurgsteinfurt, exhumed, and reinterred in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.

Lancaster aircraft #ME 581 went down near St. Trond, Belgium during a night trip to Dusseldorf, Germany. F/O B.B. Ashley, P/O N.W. Burdett, F/Os S.M. Clarke (RAF), D.W. Magan (RAF), Sgts S.W. Courtenay (RAF), and J. Palfrey (RAF) were also killed. Flying Officer Pilot Milburn was buried at St. Trond, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery, Heverlee, Brabant, Belgium.

F/L Millar was flying Spitfire aircraft #PL 490 and had been on a front-line patrol. He was returning short of fuel over friendly territory and was last seen over the Nijmegen area of Holland. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Millar is buried in the War Cemetery at Uden, North Brabant, Holland.

Whitley aircraft #Z 9231 crashed in a slight ground mist three miles from RAF Station, Colerne. Sgt R.A. Kemp (RNZAF) and three RAF members of the crew were also killed. Flight Sergeant Pilot Millar is buried in the St. John The Baptist Churchyard, Colerne, Wiltshire, England. Addendum: The squadron was based at Leeming when Whitley aircraft # Z 9231-U crashed. MILLAR, MERVIN EDWIN P/O(P) J87206. From Lethbridge, Alberta. Killed Aug 24/44 age 27. #21 Squadron (Viribus Vincimus). The crew of Wellington aircraft #JA 535 took off on an anti-sub patrol and crashed just after take-off two miles from the Ras Kirma Landing Ground, Aden. The crash was due to a suspected overspeed of the airscrew’s rotol gear. The pilot throttled back to prevent seizure of the engine, turned right through 170 degrees then stalled and crashed on a slight rise off the end of the runway. WOs D.C. Jones, J.K. Brown, P/O Mi. Leduc, and two of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Pilot Officer Pilot Millar was buried in the Military Cemetery, Socotra, Island, Indian Ocean, exhumed, and reburied in the Maala Cemetery, Aden, Arabia.

Halifax aircraft #HR 910 failed to return from a gardening operation off Borkum Island, Germany. F/L, D.D. Laidlaw, F/Os W.E. Rempel, R.W. Kemp, WO J.G. Bachand, and two RAF members of the crew were also killed. This was FS Miller’s 18th op. Five other crews were in the same area at the same time and reported no enemy activity. P/Os Morris and Geddes were engaged in cine gun attack exercises when their Hurricane aircraft collided at 5,000 feet. P/O Geddes was the pilot of one aircraft and he bailed out and landed safely. The other aircraft, #5730, went into a spin preventing P/O Morris from bailing out. The aircraft crashed near Greenwood at Kentville, Nova Scotia. Warnock (RNZAF) were also killed. Flight Sergeant Pilot Morris is buried in the St. Mary Churchyard at Black Bourton, Oxfordshire, England.
