GROVER, DON HERNANDO DESOTO P/O(N) J85140//R131386. From Kirkland Lake, Ontario. Killed Mar 26/44 age 23. #425 Alouette Squadron (Je Te Plumerai). Halifax aircraft #LW 693 crashed in the Priory grounds at Christchurch, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, England. P/Os J.G.B. Hall, R.S. Porter, Sgts G.H. Evans (RAF), F.N. Simpson (RAF), and one of the crew, not Canadian, were also killed. Two Canadians bailed out and one of the survivors reported that he heard the navigator tell the pilot to watch the airspeed indicator and then for no apparent reason the pilot gave orders to abandon the aircraft. The survivor was thrown to the floor before jumping and after leaving the aircraft he watched it go down in a shallow dive until it disappeared. The other survivor states he felt the aircraft going into a tight turn and dive to port, “The pilot gave orders to abandon the aircraft and after leaving I observed it travelling for approximately one mile in a shallow dive.” Pilot Officer Navigator Grover is buried in the Haycombe Cemetery, Bath, Englishcombe, Somerset, England.

Wellington aircraft #Z 1615 was shot down by flak during a mine-laying operation at Lango Island. Sgt Gruchy was in the front turret, was hit by shell splinters, and did not get out of the aircraft when it went down in the sea. One Canadian, WO P. Gaum, WOs S. Richards (RAF), R. Bell (RAF), and F/L J. Simpson (RAF) were taken Prisoners of War. Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Gruchy is buried in the Commonwealth Memorial Cemetery, thirteen miles north-west of Svino, Zealand, Denmark.

The pilot of Whitley aircraft #LA 784 overshot the landing, failed to gain sufficient height and struck a hill one mile south-west of the airfield at Harwell, England. FS Gullison had been slightly injured on March 3, 1942 when Fleet Finch aircraft #4753 and Fleet Finch aircraft #4783 collided about 50 feet above the ground as they took off from the aerodrome at #17 EFTS, Stanley, Nova Scotia. S/L Guthrie led his squadron of Wellington aircraft in an attack on Heligoland but the weather cleared and they were spotted by the enemy. 6 Sqdns. of German ME-109 and ME-110 aircraft attacked and shot down 12 of the 22 Allied aircraft engaged in the operation. S/L Guthrie was shot down by Helmet Lent a German Major. Lent had 8 day victories and 102 night victories; he was killed in October of 1944, F/O J.T. ChaIles and P/O R.M. Ross were pilots of other aircraft and were also killed. GUTHRIE, ROBERT HAIG LAC(P) R93322 – under training. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed Nov 19/41 age 24. #13 Service Flying Training School, St. Hubert, Quebec. LAC Guthrie was engaged in night flying training and was killed when Harvard aircraft #3110 hit a barn and crashed one mile north-east of the aerodrome at St. Hubert. A ground fog, which had formed suddenly, obscured the aerodrome lights and he was apparently circling low in an attempt to find them. Leading AirCraftman Pilot Guthrie is buried in St. John’s Norway Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.
