F/O Fair had been engaged in a bombing and strafing operation four miles south of Russi, Italy and was returning to base when his Spitfire aircraft #JF 513 suddenly went into a spin and crashed. Spitfire aircraft went into a dive at 200 feet after pulling up from attacking transports in the Orbec area of France. The aircraft crashed two miles east of Orbec. Eric graduated and went overseas without saying goodbye. A brother, in the P.P.C.L.I. in England, threatened to expose his age but Eric said he would never speak to his brother nor his mother if that happened. He has completed a large number of sorties including some during the combined operations at Dieppe. A second report of the incident states that F/O Fenwick was shot down by a Thunderbolt aircraft of the U.S. Air Force. F/O Fenwick had been slightly injured by enemy action on November 14, 1942 while operating Spitfire aircraft with #412 Squadron. The bomb aimer, F/L Dougal McGillivray of DaIkeith, Ontario took over the controls and landed Lancaster aircraft #B 793 at the Woodbridge emergency aerodrome. The port tyre burst and the port undercarriage collapsed on landing but there were no further injuries to the rest of the crew. As the flight and the landing was a team effort all the crew received decorations. On two other occasions, by his ability and skill, he has brought his damaged aircraft safely to base. Born Halifax, Nova Scotia, 30 December 1919. Home in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Attended Acadia University for three years. Enlisted in Halifax, 21 June 1940 (possibly 21 January 1940). Trained at No.2 ITS, No.8 EFTS and No. 4 SFTS (graduated 28 January 1941; awarded wings that date). Posted overseas in February 1941; further trained at No.52 OTU, March and April 1941. Served with Nos.403 Squadron, 21 April 1941 to 12 September 1941; No.402 Squadron, 21 September 1941 to January 1942; No.175 Squadron, 6 February 1942 to 9 July 1942. Returned to No.403 Squadron as B Flight Commander, 19 July 1942; became Commanding Officer on 13 August 1942. Posted to Digby as Wing Commander (Flying), 19 April 1943. Killed in action, 4 June 1943 attacking enemy shipping off Dutch coast; with four pilots of No.402 Squadron attacked three E-boats and was shot down into sea. Credited with six enemy aircraft destroyed. The citation reads – ” This officer has carried out many operational missions, having been engaged in fighter sweeps and in bombing attacks on land and sea targets. He has participated in two attacks when two mine sweepers and an enemy destroyer were sunk and two destroyers were damaged. He is a keen and zealous flight commander and leader.” FORD, S/L, Leslie Sydney (J3712) – Bar to Distinguished Flying Cross – No.403 Squadron-Award effective 16 September 1942 as per London Gazette dated 2 October 1942 and AFRO 1653/42 dated 16 October 1942. The citation reads – “On August 19th, 1942, this officer led his squadron in support of the combined operations against Dieppe with great skill. Several enemy aircraft were destroyed, two of which were shot down by Squadron Leader Ford. Throughout, his inspiring example instilled great confidence in his fellow pilots.” NOTE: Public Records Office Air 2/8769 has recommendation for a Croix de Guerre dated 20 January 1943 stating about the same as above. Although it went right through to Fighter Command Headquarters, it was not approved at Air Ministry level, either because the deed had already been covered by the Bar to the DFC or because of Ford’s death in action. Gillen as a crew member, this is not correct. Sgt W.A. Gillen was a member of a different crew, Sgt. W.H. Gillatt was a member of this crew. Sgt Jack McIntosh of Fairview Alberta was flying a Canso aircraft of the #116 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron out of Gander and reported the following. Orders came to look for a missing aircraft from their squadron. It was February 6, 1944 and the weather was not good. The flying boat was found. It had crashed into an ice fields Supplies were dropped but it was impossible to land as there were pieces of ice for miles. They notified squadron headquarters and on their return were told that the Royal Canadian Navy had been notified of the incident. The navy said they would send a frigate, corvette or destroyer to rescue the 8 stranded airmen. Jack had taken a picture of the downed aircraft and the crew members. The navy said their rescue ship broke down. All 8 airmen perished. Detail provided by L. Allison, Roland, Manitoba.
