Liberator aircraft #KN 752 was hit by enemy fire during a low level attack against an enemy airfield at Benkoelen in south-east Sumatra. F/O McBride was the only casualty. This was to be a high level raid but the new British pilot, a Group Captain, went in at low level, the Canadian survivors were; LLoyd Fife, Earl McMillan, Len McDonald, and Harry Bray. The crew of Halifax aircraft #MZ 516 were returning from operations over Mainz, Germany when the starboard outer engine caught fire. The aircraft crashed at Jones Farm, Heath Road, Banham, near Fersfield, Norfolk, England. P/Os R.J. Cowie, J.P. Ellinson, and two of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. MCBRYDE, SAMUEL HAMPTON SGT(P) 1R109887. From Kingsville, Texas, U.S.A. Killed Oct 13/42. #15 Advanced Flying Unit. The pilot of Oxford aircraft overshot a night landing during bad visibility and crashed one mile north-east of Acaster Balbis aerodrome. Three airmen, not Canadians, were also killed. Sergeant Pilot McBryde’s remains were repatriated to the United States of America, place of burial unknown.

F/O McCann was flying Spitfire aircraft #JG 121 on a strafing operation south-west of Ravenna when the aircraft appeared to be hit by flak as the aircraft began emitting black smoke. The Spitfire crashed and exploded when it hit the ground one mile south of Bagnacavallo, approximately nine miles west of Ravenna. Flying Officer Pilot McCann was buried at the crash site, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery at Ravenna, Italy.

The aircraft burst into flames, hit the water and exploded. F/Os C.F. Race and R.M. Robinson were killed in the crash, FS McCarthy was picked up by an enemy ship but died of his wounds. The navigator, WO Jack Clarke, of Toronto, Ontario, was taken Prisoner of War. This was FS McCarthy’s 14th op. WO Jack Clarke had the following to say about the operation, “We attacked from a very low altitude and ran into a solid wall of flak. The port engine was hit and on fire, F/O Race turned but a shell came thru the nose exploded in the instrument panel and hit him. The other engine was hit and we crashed into the water and exploded. I was badly wounded and in the water but what saved me was my tiny penlight flashlight which was waterproofed. A German Marine ship saw it and picked up Bill McCarthy and myself. Bill was badly wounded and died later. I went thru months in hospital and ended up in a P.O.W. P/O McGavock was awarded the D.F.C. on June 3, 1943 while serving with #420 Squadron. He had trained in Canada at #2 ITS., #14 EFTS., and #10 SFTS. The citation reads, “This officer has taken part in numerous attacks against all types of enemy targets including such heavily defended areas as Hamburg, Mannheim, Essen and Cologne. He has also participated in several mine-laying operations. Pilot Officer McGavock’s quiet determination to complete his allotted tasks, regardless of adverse weather or enemy opposition, has proved him to be an outstanding captain of aircraft who inspires the utmost confidence in his crew.” He was killed when his Lancaster aircraft #DS 615 crashed at RCAF Station, Topcliffe, Yorkshire. F/O T.E. Major and FS R.T. Welch were also killed. Wellington aircraft #Z 1142 was enroute to the target on January 10, 1942 when it was hit in the bomb bay and caught on fire. The pilot ordered the crew to bail out a few miles west of the target and the fire was extinguished about ten minutes later by the second pilot. F/L McGill was taken Prisoner of War and imprisoned in Stalag Luft 9A. He was one of six Canadians shot by the Gestapo in an attempted escape from Stalag Luft 3. Halifax aircraft #JP 199 was returning from a mine-laying operation off Sherbourg, France, and, after reaching England the starboard outer engine caught fire. The fire spread so rapidly the crew had to abandon the aircraft. S/L McGugan maintained control of the Halifax so that his crew could get out. He went down with the aircraft which crashed eight miles south of Oxford near Didcot at Ladygrove Farm. F/O G.A. England was killed when his parachute failed to open. P/O A. A Memorial plaque has been erected at Rebild Hills, Denmark, to the 69 Allied Airmen Killed in Action while dropping supplies to the Danish underground forces fighting against the Germans during the occupation of Denmark 1940 – 1945. The crew of Hampden aircraft #AE 195 were on a night navigation exercise when the starboard engine failed and the aircraft crashed in the sea off the north-east coast of Scotland. Two RAF members of the crew were also killed. Bolingbroke aircraft #9935 had the port engine catch fire in the air, the aircraft glided steeply to the ground and exploded six miles south-east of Humboldt, Saskatchewan. The crashing aircraft struck a wagon load of hay seriously injuring the driver and killing the two horses. LAC R.R. MacFarlane and the RAF pilot, Sgt E. Walsh were also killed. MCKENZIE, DANIEL MURRAY F/L(P) J8786 D.F.C., U.S.A.M. From Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Killed in Action Mar 29/43 age 22. #682 Squadron. F/L McKenzie was killed while on a photo reconnaisance mission over the Mediterranean Sea. His Spitfire aircraft #EN 347 was hit by flak and crashed in the sea just off the shores of Sardinia. The Citation for his D.F.C. reads, “This officer has taken part in a large number of operational sorties against targets which include Marseilles, Toulon, Genca, Spezia, Leghorn, and Cagliari as well as many airfields and defence lines in Tunisia. He has always shown great keenness to fly on operations and by his excellent example did much to uphold the high morale of the pilots in his flight during a very trying period.” The Citation for United States Air Medal reads, “For great gallantry in the performance of his duty while serving with #682 Squadron of the Royal Air Force, prior to his having been reported missing on active service.” Flight Lieutenant Pilot McKenzie is buried in the San Michele Communal Cemetery, Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy.
