Zabek to Zywina

ZABEK, ZYGMANT JOHN F/O(P) J18069. From Hamilton, Ontario. Killed in Action Feb 14/44 age 21. #412 Falcon Squadron (Promtus Ad Vindictum). Spitfire aircraft MH 734 took off for a Ranger Operation over Grange, France. About five minutes after take-off F/O Zabek had his engine cut out when he changed over to drop tanks. The aircraft fell behind the formation and crashed near Seven Oaks, England. Flying Officer Pilot Zabek is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England. George Frederick “Buzz” Beurling was the formation commander, of the 4-plane formation of which Zabek was no. 4. In a revised epilogue to a new printing of Malta Spitfire: The Buzz Beurling Story, author Arthur Bishop revealed that contrary to regulations, Beurling chose to keep the formation as low as possible, meaning instead of climbing to 1,000 feet above ground level before switching from drop tanks to primary fuel tanks, which regulations called for, Zabek had to perform the switch while flying low level because Beurling had apparently told the men to ignore the regulation. Their Wing Commander Buck McNair had words with Beurling, who had watched as Zabek crashed just off the end of the runway, when Beurling brought the remaining three planes back for a landing and drove out to the crash site. It would be Beurling’s last wartime flight – McNair fired him and sent him home thereafter.
