ULENS, RAYBURN WILLIAM THOMAS FS(AG) R191540. From London, Ontario. Killed in Action Jun 19/44 age 19. #226 Squadron (Non Sibi Sed Patriae). Mitchell aircraft #FL 192 was shot down in the English Channel near Guernsey Island. FS C.P. Biddlecombe was also killed and two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Ulens is buried in Soldier Cemetery, Fort George, Guernsey Island. His name is also inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.

ULRY, ARCHIE DARELD F/O(P) J19703//R60387. From Olds, Alberta. Killed Oct 24/44 age 24. #526 Squadron. F/O Ulry was killed when his Oxford aircraft struck high tension cables outside of Inverness, Scotland. The aircraft disintegrated and fell into the River Ness. He had been slightly injured on August 18, 1941 when his #55 O.T.U. aircraft suffered engine failure and crashed near Castle Eden, County Durham. Flying Officer Pilot Ulry’s remains were cremated at the Newcastle Crematorium, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. His name is incised in Portland stone, which stands at the head of the War Graves plot in the Cemetery.

UNDERHILL, EARL JOHN F/O(N) J23724. From Mimico, Ontario. Killed in Action Mar 24/44 age 21. #166 Squadron (Tenacity). Lancaster aircraft #ND 401 was shot down at Treuenbrietzen, Germany during a night trip to Berlin, Germany. F/O J.L. McGill was also killed. One Canadian, F/O Torget, was taken Prisoner of War, and four of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Flying Officer Navigator Underhill was buried at Treuenbrietzen, exhumed, and reburied in the Berlin War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Germany.

UNDERWOOD, JACK LESLIE WO2(P) R211758. From Trail, British Columbia. Killed Aug 9/45 age 21. #406 Lynx Squadron (We Kill By Night). WOs Underwood and J.M. Barker were both killed on a cross- country training flight when WO Underwood overshot a single engine landing. Mosquito aircraft #MM 745 crashed, on the go around, near Helston, Cornwall, England. Warrant Officer Class II Pilot Underwood is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.

UNGER, BERTEL M.E. SGT R58449 – clerk. From Vancouver, British Columbia. Died Oct 22/43. Death by natural causes. Sergeant Unger’s remains were cremated, his name is commemorated on the Ottawa Cremation Memorial, Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, Ontario.

Halifax aircraft #MZ 645 was shot down thirty-four miles west of the target Hamburg at Estorf, Germany. F/L J. Zavitz, P/O N. Novack, F/O V.J. Hubbard, and Sgt A.W. Cracknell (RAF) were also killed. Two Canadians, F/O Smith and FS Wintemure were either Evaders or were taken Prisoners of War. F/L Unwin was flying Typhoon aircraft #MP 132 in an armed reconnaissance both west and east of Utrecht, Holland when his aircraft was hit by flak and blew up three miles south of Barnefeld, Holland. He had been slightly injured on March 16, 1943 when his #1 O.T.U. Hurricane aircraft crashed on the ice on Lake St. John, Quebec. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Unwin is buried in the General Cemetery at Woudenberg, Holland.
