MADDEN, JOSEPH LEO ANTHONY P/O(P) J861361/R115579. From Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed Feb 11/44 age 24. #410 Cougar Squadron (Noctivaga). Mosquito aircraft #HK 520 took off and gained an altitude of 200 feet and then crashed into the sea one mile from the pier on Bradwell Creek, Essex, England. WO R.T. Currie was also killed. Pilot Officer Pilot Madden is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.

F/L Madden lost his life when his Spitfire aircraft #135 246 was shot down north-west of Poix-de-la-Somme during a fight with a German ME-109 fighter aircraft. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Madden is buried in the Churchyard at Poix-de-la-Somme, Somme, France.

Harvard aircraft #AJ 559 collided with Harvard #AJ 572, both aircraft went into a spin and crashed four miles west of Collins Bay, Ontario. P/O Madden and Fleet Air Arm airman ALA. W.H. Riddeft were killed in aircraft #AJ 559 and Fleet Air Arm airman ALA. C.A. Treble was killed in aircraft #AJ 572. Pilot Officer Pilot Madden is buried in the Erskine Cemetery at Dunbarton, Ontario.

Lancaster aircraft #ND 955 was shot down over Holland during a night trip to Aachen, Germany. Six of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Maddock is buried in the Canadian Cemetery, Nijmegen, Holland.

MADIUK, ARTHUR LAC R198589 – drogue operator. From Thorsby, Alberta. Killed Jan 24/44 age 20. #2 Bombing and Gunnery School, Mossbank, Saskatchewan. A Bolingbroke aircraft and Lysander aircraft #2369 collided in mid-air two miles north-west of the #1 target after making a turn at the west end of Lake Johnston, Saskatchewan. The crews in the aircraft were participating in a routine gunnery exercise. The pilot of the Lysander, P/O W.R. Stephens, was also killed but there were no fatalities among the airmen in the Bolingbroke. Leading AirCraftman Madiuk is buried in the Ukranian Greek Catholic Cemetery at Thorsby, Alberta.

MADORE, GARFIELD ALEXANDER P/O(P) 42143 – Royal Air Force. From Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Killed in Action May 23/40 age 22. #242 Squadron (Toujours Pret). P/O Madore was killed when his Hurricane aircraft was shot down whilst covering the evacuation from Dunkirk, France. Pilot Officer Pilot Madore is buried in the Anzac Cemetery, Sailly-Sur-la-Lup, France.

Lancaster aircraft #JB 562 was shot down by flak south-east of Heidelberg between Eschelbronn and Meckesheim, Germany, during night operations to Schweinfurt, Germany. WO G. Bryson and three RAF crew members were also killed. Two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Pilot Officer Navigator Madore was buried in the Eschelbronn Cemetery, exhumed, and reinterred in the War Cemetery at Durnbach, Germany.

P/O Magee was killed when his Spitfire aircraft #AD 291 collided with an Oxford aircraft and crashed at Ruskington Hall, Ruskington, Lincolnshire. P/O Magee was born in Shanghai, China and was educated in Rugby, England and Avon, Connecticut, U.S.A., he is the author of the poem High Flight the original manuscript of which resides in the United States Library of Congress. Pilot Officer Pilot Magee is buried in the Scopwick Church Burial Ground, Scopwick, Lincolnshire, England.

P/O Magill made a crash landing after strafing enemy positions three miles north-east of Kohima, Assam. He was killed when his Hurricane aircraft #LD 185 overturned. Pilot Officer Pilot Magill was buried in the Military Cemetery at Dirnapur, Assam, exhumed, and reinterred in the Imphal Military Cemetery, Imphal, India.

MAGUIRE, LAWRENCE ROBERT P/O(P) J15100//R54228. From East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. Killed in Action Jul 15142. #8 Squadron (Uspiam Et Passim), Khormaksar, Aden. Blenheim aircraft was shot down near Jibuti, one RAAF and three RAF members of the crow were also killed. P/O Maguire had been slightly injured by enemy action on July 18, 1941 during operations with #21 Squadron. Pilot Officer Pilot Maguire was buried with full military honors in the New European Cemetery, Jibuti, French Somaliland.

MAGUIRE, PATRICK ERNEST LAC(P) R120050 – under training. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed Oct 7/42 age 22. #11 Service Flying Training School, Yorkton, Saskatchewan. LAC Maguire lost his life when his Cessna aircraft #8013 was in a mid-air collision during night flying training and crashed one half mile north of the aerodrome at Yorkton. There were no other casualties. Leading AirCraftman Pilot Maguire is buried in the Cote Des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec.

MAHAGAN, WILFRED JOSEPH F/L(P) J11280. From Port Colborne, Ontario. Killed in Action Jun 7/44 age 21. #440 Beaver Squadron. F/L Mahagan was killed when his Typhoon aircraft #MN 307 was hit by flak. The aircraft was seen to go down in flames and explode near the ground. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Mahagan is buried in the Old Churchyard at Noyers-Bocage, Calvados, France.

Miles Master aircraft #T 8404 and Tiger Moth aircraft #T 7850 collided and crashed on the Park Warcl/Shurdington Road, Cheltenham, England. P/O Jones (RNZAF), P/O Buckland (RAF), and F/O Pledger (RAF) were also killed. Sergeant Pilot Maher is buried in the Old Cemetery, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.

Manley’s aircraft was damaged and he was flying near the French Coast with his wheels down when he was hit by flak and crashed into a house. The engine caught fire and the crew abandoned the aircraft at 3,000 feet. One RAF crew member was also killed. FS Martin had been seriously injured on January 3, 1942 when a #22 O.T.U. Wellington aircraft crashed at Wellesbourne, Mountford, Warwick, England. He was in error reported killed in this crash. Flight Sergeant Pilot Martin is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.

Ex WO Andy Hoggins of Port Elgin, Ontario had this to say about this, his second crash, We converted to Lancs and were on a cross-country flight when all four of our Lanc engines broke out in flames one after the other. The Lanc went into a stall spin and FS J.B. Peel (Nav.), FS P.J. Powers (AG), Sgt Calderwood (RAF – WOAG), and myself bailed out. FS W.J. Mayo (BA), P/O R.C. Burgess (P), and Sgt K.C. He was killed when he crashed about five miles east of Diepholz, near Hemsloh, Germany. Flight Lieutenant Pilot McAlpine was buried near the wreckage, exhumed, and reinterred in the Limmer British Cemetery at Hanover, Germany.
