Wellington aircraft #LN 540 iced up and went out of control off Flamboro, Yorkshire. The pilot told the crew to bail out and Sgt Christien followed orders. The aircraft was brought under control before anyone else jumped and landed safely at base. A sea search was undertaken for Sgt Christien without results. Sergeant Air Gunner Christien has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England.

CHRISTISON, WILLIAM RITCHIE S/L(P) J15143//R114147 D.F.C. & Bar. From Lennoxville, Quebec. Killed in Action Mar 24/45 age 26. #404 Buffalo Squadron (Ready To Fight). Beaufighter aircraft #NV 428 was hit by enemy gun fire whilst engaged in operations over Egersund Harbor, Norway. The aircraft was ditched fifteen miles south-east of the harbor, the navigator, not Canadian, missing believed killed. Squadron Leader Pilot Christison has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England. Addendum: – Distinguished Flying Cross – No.404 Squadron – Award effective 17 October 1944 as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 2534/44 dated 24 November 1944. Born 1919 in Montreal; home in Lennoxville, Quebec; enlisted Sherbrooke, 21 July 1940. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 30 September 1940), No.2 EFTS (graduated 11 December 1940) and No.7 SFTS (graduated 5 March 1941). Commissioned 1942. Killed in action with No.404 Squadron, 24 March 1945 (Beaufighter NV428); name on Runnymede Memorial. The citation reads – “This officer has completed a large number of sorties and has at all times displayed exceptional coolness and determination. On a recent sortie he was flight commander in an attack upon enemy shipping in Le Verdon harbour. During the action his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire rendering one engine useless. However, Flight Lieutenant Christison completed the attack and made a successful return flight, landing at an advanced base in France. This officer has led his squadron with great skill and has set a fine example to all.” Detail provided by H. In February 1945, Squadron Leader Christison participated in an attack against an enemy force of eleven naval vessels. The ships were sheltered by high cliffs rising steeply from the water’s edge and defended by anti-aircraft batteries on the shore. In the face of fire from these guns and from those of all the enemy ships and also opposition from enemy fighters, Squadron Leader Christison led his squadron into the attack which was pressed home with the greatest determination. Lancaster aircraft #ME 866 lost in a mid-air collision during the trip. Sgts E.L. Colley (RAF), A.W. Taylor (RAF), F/O L.A. Hall (RAF), FSs A.W. Pope (RAF), and R. Smellie (RAF) were also killed. One other crew member, not Canadian, was also killed. Pilot Officer Air Gunner Christy is buried in the Communal Cemetery at Thure, Vienne, France.

CHRISTY, RICHARD ROLAND THOMAS SGT(P) R106837. From Victoria, British Columbia. Killed May 12/42 age 19. #111 Canadian Squadron. Sgt Christy was flying Kittyhawk aircraft #AK881 and was returning from a practise interception when he reported engine trouble. He was told to return but the engine failed before he reached the airfield at Patricia Bay. Sgt Christy was killed when he crashed at Saanichton Bay, British Columbia. Sergeant Pilot Christy is buried in the Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, British Columbia.

Stirling aircraft #EH 884 lost, presumed over the target, presumed enemy action. Sgts J.D. Bates (RAF), D. Deans (RAF), D.P.J. Rawlings (RAF), and C.E. Taylor (RAF) were also killed. FS Chute was making a one engine landing in a Wellington aircraft and crashed near the aerodrome at Hunsdon, England. One RAF airman was also killed. Lancaster aircraft #JB 680 was shot down thirty miles south of Cologne, at Kesseling, Germany during a night trip to Essen, Germany. FS P.H. Simonson was also killed and five of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Pilot Officer Bomb Aimer Chute was buried at Kesseling, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery at Rheinberg Germany.

Lancaster aircraft #LM 278 was shot down twelve miles south-west of Konigsberg at Brandenburg, Germany during a night mine-laying operation. P/Os H.W. Lugg, L.K. Johnson, R.H. McNabb, and three of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Clark is buried in the Brandenburg Cemetery. His name is also inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England. Trained at No.3 ITS (graduated 12 September 1942), No.4 EFTS (graduated 27 December 1942) and No.13 SFTS (graduated 28 May 1943). Commissioned April 1944. Was he a POW or evader ? Killed in action 26/27 August 1944 Lancaster LM278); name on Runnymede Memorial. Award sent by registered mail to next-of-kin by Governor General. The citation reads – “Flight Lieutenant Clark has taken part in many operational sorties which have included attacks against targets located in the most heavily defended areas in Germany and enemy occupied territory. On one occasion in July 1944, he was captain of an aircraft detailed to attack St.Leu Desserent. When twenty-five miles from the target one engine of his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Fire broke out but was extinguished and the target was successfully attacked. Shortly after leaving the target another engine became unserviceable. The aircraft was illuminated by searchlights and heavily attacked by enemy ground defences. Largely owing to this officer’s skilful handling it escaped further damage and although the hydraulic system was shot away a forced landing was safely accomplished at base. Flight Lieutenant Clark displayed cool courage and fortitude in continuing to his target in such hazardous circumstances. Lancaster aircraft #JB 182 failed to return from night operations against Berlin, Germany. Six RAF crew members, F/Os H.T. Clarke, E.J. Moss, Sgts R.N.P. Critchlow, J.E. Goss, A.P. CLARK, DARWIN JACKSON FS(AG) R122070. From Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. Died Dec 12/42 age 19. #26 Operational Training Unit. Wellington aircraft crashed and burned on December 11, 1942. CLARK, DONALD HARTFORD F/L(P) J6993 D.F.C. From New Westminster, British Columbia. Killed Feb 7/44 age 25. F/L Clark was awarded his D.F.C. during operations with #210 Sqdn. and he was killed when his Catalina aircraft was in a mid-air collision with an United States Naval aircraft one mile off Santa Rosa Island, U.S.A. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Clark is buried in the Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby, British Columbia. Addendum: – Distinguished Flying Cross No.210 – Squadron – Award effective 1 September 1943 as per London Gazette dated 10 September 1943 and AFRO 2138/43 dated 22 October 1941 Born 1918 in Winnipeg; home in New Westminster: enlisted Vancouver, 14 December 1940. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 10 March 1941), No.8 EFTS (graduated 15 May 1941) and No,3 SFTS (graduated 20 August 1941). Commissioned 1941. .Killed in a flying accident at Pensacola, Florida, 7 February 1944 when a US Navy SNJ-4 (Harvard Trainer) collided with his PBY; eight killed. Award sent by registered mail to next-of-kin, 29 December 1944. The citation reads – “For the last fourteen months Flight Lieutenant Clark has been employed as captain of aircraft. The crew of Liberator aircraft #TT 336 were on a special night patrol when their aircraft crashed and burned twelve miles south-east of Antwerp, Belgium. FS A. L. Evens, P/O W.A. Gray, five RAF members of the crew, WO J.G. Galley D.F.M., Sgt R. Hartop, F/O F.A. Mason, W/O. R.E. Ralph, F/L G. Trail, and F/O G.R. Palmer (RAAF) were also killed. F/L Clark was the pilot of Spitfire aircraft #LF 415 which collided with Spitfire aircraft #J 834 over Cherbourg, France. Both aircraft went down in flames and no parachutes were seen. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Clark was buried at Benouville, France, exhumed, and reburied in the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, France.

With three engines of Lancaster aircraft #DV 279 damaged by flak F/L Clark maintained control of the aircraft so that his crew could bail out. He was unable to get out and went down with the aircraft which crashed at Brooks, Norfolk, England. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Clark is buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England.  Addendum: – Mention in Despatches – No.550 Squadron (deceased) – Award effective -I January 1945 as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 721/45 dated 27 April 1945. They were positioned near the end of the convoy and a storm was raging when they were sunk 12 miles south-east of Cape Farewell, Greenland. 16 RCAF Officers were rescued by a Corvette – H.M.S. Asphodel after spending 4 hours in a damaged lifeboat. They were taken ashore at Greenock, Scotland. Of the 16 survivors only one, F/O A. Allen, was killed during the war. Halifax aircraft #LK 908 was returning from a trip to Kassel, Germany when it was attacked by an enemy night fighter aircraft. Sgt Clemenhagen was hit by m/g fire and was killed instantly. Sgt P.L. Emms (RAF) was also killed during the attack. The Halifax landed safely on the United States aerodrome at Snetterton Heath, England. The aircraft was completely riddled with machine gun and cannon shells. All communications, escape hatches, hydraulics, and most control cables were destroyed. Despite all these problems, the pilot made a sucesful landing with no further loss of life even though the undercarriage collapsed and the aircraft ground looped. Sergeant Air Gunner Clennenhagen is buried in the City Cemetery, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
