Lancaster aircraft #EE 179 lost during a night operation against Berlin, Germany. Six of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Flying Officer Air Gunner Kay is buried in the Berlin War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Germany.

KAY, HARRY LESLIE S/L(P) C888, From Schomberg, Ontario. Killed in Action Jan 28/45 age 22. #428 Ghost Squadron (Usque Ad Finem). Lancaster aircraft #KB 770 was shot down and crashed five miles south of the target Stuttgart, Germany. P/Os J.W. Blades, F.L. Jolicouer, F/O G.J. Liney, and Sgt R.W. Gullick (RAF) were also killed. A survivor, F/O Stapelford, stated that the aircraft seemed to be hit by hundreds of large shells and the four motors caught fire immediately. The aircraft went down quickly, F/O Stapleford and FS Ossington were sucked out of a window, which had been smashed by the cannon shells, descended by parachute and were taken Prisoners of War. Squadron Leader Pilot Kay is buried in the War Cemetery at Durnbach, Germany.

KITE, GEORGE ROBERT GRAHAM F/O(P) J87906. From Pettapiece, Manitoba. Killed in Action Sep 23/44 age 22. #10 Squadron (Rem ACLA Tangere). Halifax aircraft #MZ 474 was engaged in a trip to Neuss, Germany when it crashed in the U.S. section of the village of Zwier, Limburg, Holland. The W.O.A.G., FS A.G.T. Saunders was also killed. One Canadian, the navigator, F/O G. Charley, and four of the crew, not Canadians, all bailed out to safety. F/O Kite’s brother, Captain J.L. Kite provided the following details, “Graham was the eldest son in a family of four and was needed at home on the farm to help his father who had been seriously wounded in W.W.I. Like many sons of the region, he felt duty bound to serve his country as his father had done. Graham was sent to Brandon Manning depot in the winter of 1941 and then to Initial Training School in Saskatoon. As there was no immediate opening at a flying training school he approached his Commanding Officer and was granted an extended furlough so that he could go home and help his Dad on the farm. He completed his elementary flying training on October 8, 1942 with a total of 76 hours. Graham completed his service flying at Dauphin, were his Dad presented him his wings on February 18, 1943. Posted overseas he flew his first mission on May 12, 1944, and between June and August of 1944 went on missions to; Ferme D’Urville, Trappes, Mont Fleury, St. Lo, Laval, Amiens, Blainville, St. Martin L’Hortier, Croixdale, Thivery, Nucourt, Mont Candon, Vaires M/Y (Paris), Buttrop, Kiel, Stuttgart, Ferfay, Foret De Niep, Prouville, and Bois de Cassans. Graham flew his 31 first and last operation over Neuss, Germany. Their aircraft was hit and the crew was ordered to bail out. All jumped except Graham and the flight engineer. Graham tried to land the stricken aircraft and according to an eye witness nearly succeded. The aircraft struck some high trees and was completely demolished. S/L Klersy was the Commanding Officer of #401 Squadron and was an ace having destroyed sixteen and one half enemy aircraft. S/L Klersy was flying Spitfire aircraft #RM 785 over the Rhinerim-Goch area of Germany and disappeared into a cloud, the aircraft was found, crashed and burned, at Udem, Germany. Klersy was the fourth C.O. of this Sqdn. to be shot down in 10 months. The other C.O.s were; S/Ls Lorne M. Campbell D.F.C. of Roland, Manitoba, F. Kennedy of Cumberland, Ontario, and N.C. Trainor of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Campbell and Kennedy were Evaders and Trainor was taken Prisoner of War. F/L Knight had begun his second tour of operations when his Lancaster aircraft #PB 183 failed to return from a night raid against Dresden, Germany. F/Os D.B. Olson, J.A. Kaucharik, R.A. French, F.M. Gordon, E.W. Connolly, and F/L J. Armitt were also killed. One Canadian, F/L Frederick was taken Prisoner of War. This was an eight-man crew, an extra bomb aimer was on board to gain experience. The Dresden target had been suggested by the Russians and Bomber Command agreed to set up an operation. There was no flak or enemy fighter aircraft anywhere near Dresden and many veteran fliers who knew what to expect knew something was wrong. Dresden had almost escaped all bombing raids up to this point in the war, it was a,large city of civilians plus thousands of refugees escaping the Russian advance. After the raid Bomber Command realized they had been suckered by the Russians into murdering over 100,00 innocent civilians and refugees. Five of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Flight Sergeant Navigator/Bomb Aimer Knutson has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey, England. Addendum: The crew of LA 995 were lost during a navigation and fuel consumption test, the first turning point was the island of St. Kilda. The aircraft was last seen flying very low in mist and rain near the island of Boreray and about the same time a signal was received at Stornoway reporting that all was correct. This was the last that was heard from the Wellington. An intensive search was carried out but nothing was found. On March 2nd. the body of the rear gunner, Sgt. Alston, was found washed up on the west coast of Lewis, and it was assumed that the aircraft had come down in the sea. In 1978 the wreckage of a Wellington aircraft was found on the island of Soay. All the evidence points to the wreckage as being that of LA 995. The RAF members of the crew of LA 995 who were also killed are: Sgts R. Spencer, G. Stewert, G. Turley, W. Day, and W. Alston. This group of islands is known as St. Kilda and are located in the North Atlantic about fifty miles west of the Outer Hebrides. Detail provided by David E. Thompson, Middlesborough, England.

Halifax aircraft #DT 679 was shot down near Staplermoor, Germany during a night operation over Berlin, Germany. F/Os H.E. Tanner, F.N. Cavanaugh, FS G.W. Herrington, and three RAF members of the crew, Sgts E.A. Biggs, T.W. Harris, and R.H. Holtham were also killed. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Kopacz was buried at Staplermoor, exhumed, and reburied in the Sage War Cemetery, Oldenburg, Land Niedersachsen, Germany.
