Halifax aircraft #MZ 501 was on a special operation and was shot down at St. Trond, Belgium. P/Os A.0 Macallivray, C.D. Stroud, P/O P. Hicken (RAF), F/O J.D. Hurley (RAF), Sgts P.J. Jeffs (RAF), R. Rook (RAF), and J. Shields (RAF) were also killed. One Canadian, F/O Gaunt, was either an Evader or was taken Prisoner of War. Pilot Officer Navigator Sabine was buried at St. Trond, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery, Heverlee, Brabant, Belgium.

SABOURIN, FRANKLIN THOMAS SGT(AG) R125902. From Iroquois Falls, Ontario. Killed in Action Nov 7/42 age 20. #83 Squadron (Strike To Defend), Pathfinder Force. Lancaster aircraft crashed. SABOURIN, JOSEPH JEAN PAUL F/L(P) J3519 D.F.C. From Prescott, Ontario. Killed in Action Sep 16/42 age 27. #145 Squadron (Diu Noctuque Pugnamus). F/L Sabourin was killed when his Spitfire aircraft was lost to enemy action. He had been shot down on November 22, 1941 but managed to bail out to safety. During his tour he shot down; five ME-109 German fighter aircraft, one JU-87 German aircraft, and one Fiat-50 Italian aircraft. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Sabourin is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery, El Alamein, North Africa.

SABOURIN, MAURICE RAOUL FS(P) R150674. From Bonnyville, Alberta. Killed in Action Nov 7/43 age 24. #127 Canadian Squadron, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Hurricane aircraft #5659 was engaged in a dawn patrol when it had engine failure. FS Sabourin’s attempts to bail out were unsuccessful and both aircraft and pilot went into the ground from 1,000 feet. The Hurricane crashed and burned in a densely wooded ravine about three miles from the Village of Northwest Cove, Nova Scotia. Within minutes local people arrived at the scene but could do nothing as the aircraft was an inferno. A plaque has been erected in a town about fifeteen miles from Northwest Cove and bears the following inscription, “In Commemoration of the finding of a Miraculous Medal worn by FLT SGT MAURICE R. SABOURIN R.C.A.F. Dartmouth who was killed in an aircraft accident while on duty at N.W. Cove on Sunday Nov 7, 1943. The Medal was miraculously preserved from destruction and was found intact after having been five hours in the fire.” Flight Sergeant Pilot Sabourin is buried in the St. Louis Parish Cemetery at Bonnyville, Alberta.

SADESKI, JOHN SGT(AG) R140616. From Souris, Manitoba. Killed in Action Aug 3/43 age 24. #419 Moose Squadron (Moosa Aswayita). Target – Hamburg, Germany. Halifax aircraft #DT 798 appeared to be hit by lightning just before it reached the target, all four engines failed and the electrical system went out. FSs J.S. Sobin, D.J. McCarty, and one RAF member of the crew were also killed. Two Canadians, Sgt J.P. Mahoney, F/O Sibalis, and one RAF member of the crew bailed out and were taken Prisoners of War. This was Sgt Sadeski’s first operation. Sergeant Air Gunner Sadeski is buried in the Becklingen War Cemetery at Soltau, Germany.

SADLER, JOHN MURRAY FS(WAG) R62910. From Chatham, New Brunswick. Killed May 7/42 age 22. #23 Operational Training Unit. Wellington aircraft #Z 1053 was carrying 6 x 250 lb. sand-filled practise bombs when the reduction gear on the starboard motor failed. The aircraft crashed and burned also killing, P/O P.J. Patin, FS G.L. Mesheau, Sgts J.M. Charbonneau, V.S. Henderson (RAAF), and one RAF member of the crew. Flight Sergeant Wireless Operator Air Gunner Sadler is buried in the Pershore Cemetery, Worcestershire, England.

SAGE, KENNETH FREELAND F/L(P) C1191. From London, Ontario. Killed in Action Dec 24/44 age 23. #439 Westmount Squadron. F/L Sage lost his life when his Typhoon aircraft #MN 894 was hit by flak and crashed in flames near Hedburg, Germany. Flight Lieutenant Pilot Sage was buried in the #1 U.S. Military Cemetery at Foy, Belgium, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery, Hotton, Luxembourg, Belgium.

SAGE, WILLIAM BRUCE FS(P) R105629. From Lacombe, Alberta. Killed Sep 4/42 age 19. #25 Operational Training Unit, Finningley, England. Wellington aircraft #DV 600 crashed at High Scaw Fell, Rosthwaite near Keswick, Cumberland. FSs G.E. Derbyshire, FS J. Anderson, Sgt J.L. Brovender, and one RAF airman were also killed, Flight Sergeant Pilot Sage is buried in the Causewayhead Cemetery, Silloth, Holme Low, Cumberland, Scotland.

F/S. S.A. Rae (RNZAF), Sgts H.G. Colwell (RAF), T. Gilmartin (RAF), R.E. Miles (RAF), F.E. Spinks (RAF), and F.G. Tomlinson (RAF) were also killed. Flying Officer Navigator Sager is buried in the Churchyard at Longueil, Seine Maritime, France.

SAILS, JOHN CAMERON P/O(P) J17062//R71474. From Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed in Action Mar 27/43 age 21. #92 Squadron (Aut Pugna Alit Morere). P/O Sails was killed when his Spitfire aircraft #ES 212 was shot down in French North Africa whilst engaged in operations. Pilot Officer Pilot Sails has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Alamein War Memorial, Egypt.

P/O St. Aubin was killed when his Hurricane aircraft #BM 268 was in a mid-air collision near Sedrrinco Bay. Pilot Officer Pilot St. Aubin is buried in the Trincomalee War Cemetery, Ceylon.

  3. DENNIS, JOHN ALFRED P/O(P) J18964. From Waterloo, Quebec. Killed in Action Dec 1/43 age 22. #411 Grizzly Bear Squadron (Inimicus Inimico. Spitfire aircraft #MJ 288 was shot down fifteen miles northwest of Cambrai, France. Ex F/L D. Matheson now of Edmonton, Alberta had this to say about the sortie, “John St. Dennis was my wingman when we took off for a sweep into France at a low-level. We were both hit by cannon fire from those mobile multiple cannon trucks which were very accurate. We both crashed and I got out and got away. I spent several months with the underground and ended up as a Prisoner of War.” The engine of St. Dennis’ Spitfire was dug up recently by a team under Andrew Coilliot of Beaurains, France. A monument was erected in a village near the site. Pilot Officer Pilot St. Dennis is buried in the Vitry-Em-Artois Communal Cemetery, France.

Died Mar 5/42 age 23. #409 Nighthawk Squadron (Media Nox Meridies Noster) AC1 St. Hilaire was struck by an Army truck on the Lincoln/Leaford Road, England and died in the RAF Hospital at Rauceby shortly after. AirCraftman First Class St. Hilaire is buried in the Scopwick Church Burial Ground, Scopwick, Lincolnshire, England.
  6. JOHNS, WILLIAM IVAN P/O(P) J23301. From Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Killed Sep 3123 age 24. #22 Operational Training Unit. Wellington aircraft #NE 645 had the port engine on fire and went into a spin at 10,000 feet. The pilot did not regain control and the aircraft crashed. WO W.H. Allan and P/O R.W. Wolfe were also killed and two other Canadians were injured. Pilot Officer Pilot St. Johns is buried in the Stratford-On-Avon Cemetery, Evesham Road, Warwickshire, England.

Halifax aircraft #HX 325 was shot down on February 21, 1944 while engaged in an operation against Leipzig, Germany. Four of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Three Canadians, S/L Carter, F/L Bodnar, and S/L Sale were taken Prisoners of War but S/L Sale had been wounded during the action and died as a P.O.W. S/L Sale had been reported missing on May 13, 1943 during a trip over enemy territory in a #35 Pathfinder Sqdn. Halifax aircraft. He was reported safe in Gibraltar on August 4, 1943. Squadron Leader Pilot Sale is buried in the War Cemetery at Choloy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France.

Crossley (RAF) were also killed. Pilot Officer Bomb Aimer Samuel was buried in the Catholic Cemetery on Potsdamer St. at Solingen, Germany, exhumed, and reburied in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany.

SAMUEL, HECTOR PATRICK LAC(BA) R171264 – under training. From Montreal, Quebec. Killed Jun 15/43 age 18. #1 Bombing and Gunnery School, Jarvis, Ontario. Anson aircraft #7339 and #7566 collided in mid-air during a bombing practise. The aircraft crashed three miles east of the bombing target at Willow Grove, Ontario, F/O E.B. Norbury, LACs F.E. lnnes, J.H. Kearney, J. Alexander Smith, J.A. Holgate, and A.R. Hayes were also killed. F/O Norbury was the pilot and LACs Samuel, Smith, and Kearney were crew members of aircraft #7566. LACs Hayes, Innes, and Holgate were in aircraft #7339. Leading AirCraftman Bomb Aimer Samuel is buried in the Cote Des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal, Quebec.

Halifax aircraft #FIX 162 had reached the turning point, about sixty miles north-east of the target, when it was attacked by a German ME-109 fighter aircraft and set on fire. The pilot ordered the bombs jettisoned and then turned the aircraft for home. The Halifax was damaged by flak as it neared Hamburg, Germany and the crew was told to bail out. Sgt Sanderson and one of the crew, not Canadian, were fatally wounded in the attacks and were left in the aircraft when the other five of the crew, F/O H.L. Bullis, WO A.H. Towers, FSs M.A.Potter, Bonathan (RAF), and Sgt B.H. Boisvert (USAAF) bailed out; they were all taken Prisoners of War. Sergeant Air Gunner Sanderson is buried in the Ohlsdorf Cemetery, Hamburg, Germany.

The navigator was ordered to bail out and saw Scott abandon the aircraft at about 500 feet. S/L Scott was killed when his parachute did not have time to fully open. Sgt Scratch was killed when his Mitchell aircraft #AD 343 crashed four miles north of the aerodrome at Boundary Bay after five hours and fifteen minutes of dangerous low- flying. Just prior to his unauthorized flight in the Mitchell, Sgt Scratch had taken a Liberator aircraft and taxied it off the tarmac and into a ditch, all four propellers struck the hard surfaced road, three of the propellers fractured the reduction housing and broke free of the aircraft. The nosewheel oleo leg was also sheared off and the aircraft collapsed on its belly on the roadway. Sgt Scratch was not authorized to taxi the Liberator. Sergeant Pilot Scratch is buried in the Ashmont Cemetery at Maymont, Saskatchewan.
