Lancaster aircraft crashed on St. Margarets Island, Caldy, South Wales. FSs R.G. Smith, R.J. Middleton, and S. Franchuk were also killed. One Canadian, FS Anderson, was safe, and two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Pilot Officer Pilot Dabbs is buried in the St. Mary New Churchyard, Carew, Pembrokeshire, Wales.  Addendum: – Distinguished Flying Cross – No.101 Squadron – Award effective 14 December 1942 as per London Gazette dated 18 December 1942 and AFRO 2113/42 dated 30 December 1942. Born at Forestburg, Alberta, 1922. Educated at Daysland, Alberta; home is variously given as Forestburg and Daysland. Enlisted in Edmonton, 6 February 1941. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 15 May 1941), No.16 EFTS (graduated 2 July 1941), and No.4 SFTS (graduated 13 September 1941). Commissioned 1942. Killed on flying operations, 7 December 1942 on a Lancaster; buried in United Kingdom. Award presented to next of kin, 31 April 1944. The citation reads – “One night in December 1942, this officer was the pilot of an aircraft detailed to attack Frankfurt. When nearing the target area his aircraft, whilst held in a cone of searchlights, was hit by anti-aircraft fire and one of its engines was put out of action. Despite this, Pilot Officer Dabbs flew onto his target but as the bomb release mechanism was unserviceable he was unable to drop his bombs. Displaying skillful airmanship, he flew his aircraft back to this country without the assistance of wireless aids. With a full bomb load he made a masterly landing in poor visibility. This officer’s skill and determination in the face of adverse circumstances set an example worthy of the highest praise. He has flown on several sorties with distinction.” Detail provided by H. DAER, HAROLD CRAWFORD FS(P) R209991. From Goderich, Ontario. Killed Apr 9/45 age 21. #57 Operational Training Unit. FS Daer was flying Spitfire aircraft #BL 342 and was engaged in a dive bombing practise. He was killed when his aircraft dived into a farm yard at Belford, Northumberland, England. Flight Sergeant Pilot Daer is buried in the Stonefall Cemetery, Wetherby Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England.

Hampden aircraft #AE 297 lost during a night bombing attack on Warenmunde, Germany. FSs C.H. Finkbeiner, J.W. Markle, and Sgt E.J.J. Killham (RAF) were also killed. Pilot Officer Air Gunner Dafoe is buried in the Berlin War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Germany.

Lancaster aircraft #W 4257 lost during a trip over enemy territory. Seven RAF members of the crew, Sgts A.E. Bagley, W.G. Barnes, H.P. Hunter, R.W. Lea, K.A. Tester, FS C.W. Dahl, and P/O RI. Pickup were also killed. There were two pilots on board for this operation. Flight Sergeant Air Gunner Dahl is buried in the Pont-du-Cens Communal Cemetery, Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France.

Mitchell aircraft had the starboard engine catch fire at 800 feet and then crash at New Providence, Bahamas. P/Os D.T. Hollowell, B.H. Zdan, and Sgt G.E.C. Richards (RAF) were also killed. WO Dale was engaged in strafing enemy lorries when his Spitfire aircraft #BP 978 was hit by enemy fire. The aircraft caught fire and then crashed at Fier, Albania. Warrant Officer Class II Pilot Dale has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Alamein War Memorial, Egypt.

DALGLEISH, NEIL JOHN FS(P) R105922. From Grand Prairie, Alberta. Killed Dec 20/42 age 24. #8 Bombing and Gunnery School, Lethbridge, Alberta. FS Dalgleish, LAC E. Bohush, P/O G.H. Brazier, and LAC S.L. Palmer (RAAF) were on a routine air to ground gunnery exercise and were all killed when Bolingbroke aircraft #9898 crashed and burned fifteen miles south-west of the aerodrome at Lethbridge. Flight Sergeant Pilot Dalgleish is buried in the Grande Prairie Cemetery, Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Sgt Dalglish was held captive and was killed when a German was seen to throw him off a cliff. Sergeant Air Gunner Dalglish was buried at St. Pair-sur-Mer, exhumed, and reburied in the Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery, Reviers, Calvados, France.

LAC Daly was killed just before graduation when Tiger Moth aircraft #4986 crashed in a large open field two miles north of Okatoks, Alberta. Sgt WA. Malin was also killed. DALZIEL, JACK CHALDECOTT F/O(P) J16296. From Okanagan Landing, British Columbia. Killed Jul 6/44 age 22. #168 Maintenance Unit. Beaufighter aircraft #TF 145 was engaged in an air test when it crashed at the Sporting Club Golf Course, Heliopolis. Two airmen, not Canadians, also killed. Flying Officer Pilot Dalziel is buried in the Military Cemetery at Heliopolis, Egypt.

The citation reads – “Pilot Officer Danahy is a keen and dependable captain of aircraft who has invariably completed his attacks with courage and determination. In October 1942, he took part in the daylight raid on Milan, an extremely long and difficult operation, during which he displayed resolution and courage in locating the target accurately. In January 1943, after a successful attack on a target in the Ruhr, Pilot Officer Danahy’s aircraft was attacked by an enemy night fighter. DANIELS, GEORGE EMANUEL FS(P) R71640. From Toronto, Ontario. Killed May 5/42 age 22. #1 Air Observers School. Anson aircraft #W 2631 hit a balloon cable and crashed at Barrow, England. Three RAF airmen were also killed. Flight Sergeant Pilot Daniels’ remains were cremated at the Aberdeen Crematorium, Aberdeen, Scotland. His name is commemorated on a bronze panel in the columbarium.

The RAF ground crew rushed to the crash to help the air crew and the bomb load blew up. Sgt J.C. Gaudet, FS H.A. Wilkins, Sgt G.E.A. Romain (RAF), one other RAF member of the air crew, and thirteen members of the ground crew were all killed. This was P/O Dann’s twentieth operation. Halifax aircraft #JD 331 was over the Hanover area of Germany when a German JU-88 aircraft came up from below and racked the Halifax from nose to tail with cannon fire. After a second attack the whole Halifax was on fire, including the bomb bays with the bombs still on board. The bail-out signal was given and all but three of the crew got out. FS A.G. Harris (RAF), Sgt D.W. Sweet (RAF), and WO D’Aperng were killed and four of the crew, E/L. D.J. Corcoran, WO A.G. MacKenzie, F/O D.E. Larlee, and Sgt W.E. Greensides were taken Prisoners of War. D’Aperng had been seriously wounded October 11, 1942 when a #419 Squadron Wellington aircraft stalled and crashed at the Croft aerodrome, England. Whilst over the target area the aircraft was subjected to an intense barrage of anti-aircraft fire. Despite this, the objective was attacked from only 150 feet. Flight Sergeant Darby’s skillful navigation contributed materially to the success of this hazardous operation. DAVEY, RUPERT HENRY WO2(P) R68649. From Fort William, Ontario. Killed Oct 31/42 age 21. #511 Squadron. Liberator aircraft was in transit from Malta to Gibraltar when it crashed in the sea off the east end of the runway at Gibraltar. Forty passengers, mainly RAF fighter pilots, and the crew were all killed. Two Canadians, F/O E.H. Glazebrook, D.F.C. and P/O J.W. Williams, D.F.C. were two of the passengers killed and had been flying Spitfire aircraft with #126 Squadron at Malta. FS C.E. Mutch was one of the crewmen killed and Canadian ace F/L Buzz Beurling D.S.O., D.F.C., D.F.M. was one of the few to survive. Both Liberator pilots were Canadians and all the fighter pilots were on their way to England as the fighter pilots had finished their tours. One of the survivors had this to say: The Liberator hugged the African shoreline to Algiers and banked north to Gibraltar. A raging thunderstorm was on and WO Davey missed part of the landing strip so he opened up all four engines. Buzz Beurling was looking out the window and sensed trouble so he yanked the emergency door open, he felt the aircraft stall so jumped out and managed to swim to shore. Only Beurling, F/L A.H. Donaldson (RAF), and one civilian survived, this was Beurlings fifth crash. RAF crew member, Sgt D.W.J. Spencer, and passenger P/O E. Hetherington (an RAF ace) were also killed. DAWSON, JOSEPH SGT(P) R58418. From Berkley, California, U.S.A. Killed May 9/41 age 22. #18 Elementary Flying Training School, Patricia Bay, British Columbia. Sgt Dawson and a student pilot were practicing starting the engine in flight and at an altitude of 5,000 feet the engine was stopped. In the subsequent dive at 1,500 feet Sgt Dawson pulled Tiger Moth aircraft #431 8 out quite steeply causing the starboard mainplane to collapse. The student bailed out to safety but Sgt Dawson was unable to get out and was killed when the aircraft crashed at the W.O. Mitchell farm. Sergeant Pilot Dawson is buried in the Royal Oak Burial Park, Victoria, British Columbia.
