He reported he was going to bail out over the English Channel about fifteen miles west of Le Tourquit, France. A parachute was seen on the water but when air-sea rescue arrived all they found was an empty dinghy. One RAF and three RNZAF members of the crew bailed out but P/O McLaren stayed at the controls too long and ‘went down with the aircraft. McLaren had finished his tour of 30 ops. but volunteered to go again as the regular pilot was sick. Pilot Officer Pilot McLaren is buried in the Churchyard on Ockero Island, Sweden.

MCLAREN, ROBERT WILLIAM F/O(P) J19717. From Long Branch, Ontario. Killed in Action JuI.3/44 age 24. #417 City of Windsor Squadron (Supporting Liberty And Justice). F/O McLaren was flying Spitfire aircraft #JG 272 at 8,000 feet in the Arezzoqitau area of Italy and was looking for a target to bomb when the port wing was hit by flak and half the wing was blown away. The aircraft went into a spin, did not recover and exploded and burst into flames on impact. Flying Officer Pilot McLaren was buried one mile west of Chiusi Deil Verna, Italy, exhumed, and reinterred in the Arezzo War Cemetery, Arezzo, Italy.

Apitz (RAAF), B.A. Cooper (RAAF), J. Haines (RAF), and F/L R.P. Wade (RAF) were also killed. Warrant Officer Class I Wireless Operator Air Gunner McLellan is buried in the Tamlaght Finlagan Church of Ireland Churchyard, Ballykelly, County Londonderry, Ireland. Addendum: Two Liberator aircraft crashed into the mountains at Shroove and Glengad on the same date, killing 16 airmen. On Sunday June 19 1994 a commemoration service was held at Greencastle, close to where one of the aeroplanes came down. Crosses were erected in memory of those who lost their lives. The service was attended by around 200 people including the mayor of Londonderry, Jim Guy and East Londonderry M.P. William Ross. WO McMillan was on his 16th. operation when he was killed during an attack against Duisburg, Germany. Halifax aircraft #JB 791 was shot up by a German JU-88 fighter aircraft, the front perspex was hit but none of the crew were hurt. Fires broke out in the starboard wing and five of the crew bailed out at 12,000 feet, fifty miles west of Duisburg. Sgt Klein stated he was the last to go out the front hatch and thought he heard an explosion soon after. One RAF member of the crew, Sgt Alison was right behind Klein but was also killed. Four Canadians, Sgts W.J. Klein, W.J. Howell, Wallace, and H.G. Bees were taken Prisoners of War. There were two #419 Squadron aircraft lost this night. Please see Sgt W.A. His unarmed Spitfire aircraft #PM 142 was shot down the day after hostilities had ceased in Europe. These same ships had been attacked by Russian aircraft earlier in the day. Strong retaliatory action was taken against the German ships for violating the cease fire. This information was provided by B. Hansen a Danish researcher from Copenhagen. The fire could not be extinguished and the propeller could not be feathered so P/O McMullen ordered his crew to bail out and he remained at the controls of the aircraft and guided it away from the city of Darlington, County Durham, England. The aircraft, with P/O McMullen still at the controls, crashed just outside of the city. The city of Darlington honored him by erecting a cairn and naming McMullen Road after him. Pilot Officer Pilot McMullen is buried in the Stonefall Cemetery, Wetherby Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire, England.

The Lancaster caught fire and all the crew bailed out except for P/O McNary and P/O J.L. Chartrand. McNary was trying to help a wounded Chartrand when the aircraft exploded and crashed at Ghent, Belgium. This was P/O McNary’s sixteenth operation. The remainder of the crew, Canadians F/L F. Love, WOs D. Sangster, J.J. Wilson, F/O R.C. Long, and one crew member, Sgt Hill, who was not a Canadian, were all taken Prisoners of War. Whitley aircraft #K 8957 crashed 100 yards north of the Long Marston airfield at Warwickshire, England. Four of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. The aircraft was being ferried from #10 OTU to Jurby, Isle of Man with F/O McSherry at the controls. Severe icing conditions occured at 8,000 feet and the intercom quit. The aircraft went out of control and the five tried to get into their parachutes. Only P/O George Slater of North Battleford, Saskatchewan managed to bail out and he jumped at 250 feet. He was badly injured but recovered to fly with #78 Sqdn. He was later promoted to Wing Commander of #139 Sqdn. flying Mosquito aircraft and earned a D.F.C. Flying Officer Pilot McSherry is buried in the Burstwick Cemetery, Yorkshire, England.

His coolness, courage and devotion to duty has largely contibuted to the successful completion of many operational sorties.” F/L McSorley was killed when his Halifax aircraft #W 7823 crashed in the dark at Upwood Village, Huntingdon.
