MORRISON, GILLMOR INNIS FS(P) R110110. From Vancouver, British Columbia. Killed Jan 4/43 age 25. #39 Squadron (Die Noctuque). On January 3, 1943 the crew of Beaufort aircraft #DW 825 were making a very low approach to :the practise target over a choppy sea in the Gulf of Suez. The aircraft appeared to touch the water, rise at an angle of 45 degrees with the port engine on fire and then crash into the sea. HMS Alpha reported two airmen were picked up within ten minutes and although a search was carried out by sea and air there were no other survivors. FS D.S. Cameron, P/O T.H. O’Neil, and WO G. Ernest Walker were also killed. FS Morrison succumbed to his injuries the next day while in hospital. Flight Sergeant Pilot Morrison is buried in the Suez New War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

MORRISON, GORDON DOUGLAS GRANT WO2(AG) R95853. From Britannia Bay, Ontario. Killed in Action Jun 11/43. #104 Squadron (Strike Hard). Wellington aircraft #W 5376 was shot down during operations. The body of WO Morrison was found on Pantelleria Island on September 7, 1943. There were no signs of the aircraft nor the other crew members. F/O B.B. Reid and three of the crew, not Canadians, were also killed. Warrant Officer Class II Air Gunner Morrison was buried on PanteMena Island, exhumed, and reburied in the Enfidaville War Cemetery, Tunisia.

Halifax aircraft #LK 662 crashed between the villages of Andisleben and Dachwig, Germany during a trip to Leipzig, Germany. F/O L.B. Fincham was also killed. MORRISON, STEWART MACKENZIE LAC(P) R154006 – under training. From Lachine, Quebec. Killed Nov 26/42 age 23. #2 Service Flying Training School, Uplands, Ontario. LAC Morrison and P/O W. Tuhkanen took off in Harvard aircraft #3778 engaged on first dual instruction to student and were both killed when the aircraft crashed near Low, Quebec. In the next two days over sixty-five aircraft took part in the search for the Harvard which was not found until the following year. Leading AirCraftman Pilot Morrison is buried in Lake View Cemetery, Point Claire, Quebec.

F/O Morrison was flying Typhoon aircraft #MN 426 in a dive bombing and strafing an enemy vehicle dump near Falaise, France when the end of a wing was knocked off by enemy flak. The aircraft went into a spin at low altitude and was seen to strike the ground and explode killing F/O Morrison. Flying Officer Pilot Morrison is buried in the Bretteville-Sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery, France.

MORRISON, WILLIAM MELVIN LAC(P) R132186 – under training. From Pense, Saskatchewan. Killed Jul 25/42 age 21. #12 Elementary Flying Training School, Goderich, Ontario. LAC Morrison lost his life when Tiger Moth aircraft #3933 caught fire and crashed near Port Albert, Ontario. Leading AirCraftman Pilot Morrison is buried in the Regina Cemetery, Regina, Saskatchewan.

Six RAF members of the crew missing believed killed. Flying Officer Bomb Aimer Morrison is buried in the Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Addendum: F/L W.G. Davies (RAF), F/Os F.J. Dyer (RAF), B.R. Garnett (RAF), FS. K.G. Meehan (RAF), Sgts K.G. Porter (RAF), and S.W. Smith (RAF) were also killed. Halifax aircraft went down at Florennes during operations over enemy territory. Seven RAF members of the crew, Sgts J.M.B. Albrecht, E.L.R. Brown, R.F.H. Kenyon, T. McCallum, G.A. Robson, J.W. Taylor, and F/O D.E. Pike were also killed. There were two pilots in the aircraft for this operation. Flight Sergeant Pilot Morrissy is buried in the Communal Cemetery at Florennes, Namur, Belgium.

Spitfire aircraft #JF 941 was on a defensive patrol over the beach at Anzio, Italy and was shot down by an enemy aircraft. P/O Morrow reported by r/t that he was bailing out at 1,000 feet. His parachute was seen to open at less than 100 feet, swing violently twice and land in the sea. P/O Pilot Morrow is buried in the Beach Head Cemetery at Anzio, Rome, Italy.

Beaufighter aircraft #LZ 452 failed to return from a torpedo attack operation at Lister on the Norwegian Coast. The RAF navigator, Bruce Conn, was also killed. F/L Munro had previously completed a tour flying Beaufighter aircraft out of Malta. His brother ex P/O Ray Munro now of Oakville, Ontario says, “Roy and I both joined the RCAF in early 1940. Roy was in 5 major accidents while in training in Canada, in England, during his first tour out of Malta, and during his second tour out of Wick, Scotland. We both must have been accident prone because I was involved in 5 major accidents in 1941 when I flew Spits in England under S/L Stan Turner, Can/RAF, and W/C. Doug Bader the great RAF ace. Twice I crashed my Spit and both times it was caused by sabotage. Once I crashed when hit by our own flak and once I bailed out. Another time my undercarriage collapsed and for the 4th time was severely injured. P/O Musgrave bailed out and was killed when his parachute failed to open. Of the other six Canadians, P/O Bruce H. Walter, F/Os R.C. Wiens, A.B. Durfee, WO R.H. Rafter, FS A.C. Budd, and Sgt J.L. Umscheid all but Durfee and Umscheid got to Sweden and back safely to the United Kingdom. F/O Durfee and Sgt Urnscheid were taken Prisoners of War. MYNARSKI, ANDREW CHARLES P/O(AG) J87544//R134239 V.C. From Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed in Action Jun 13/44 age 27. #419 Moose Squadron (Moosa Aswayita). Target – Cambrai, France. Lancaster aircraft was hit by cannon fire from a JU-88 enemy night fighter aircraft and set on fire. The rear gunner, F/O G.P. Brophy was trapped in the rear turret and P/O Mynarski tried to free him after the rest of the crew had bailed out. Mynarski’s clothing and parachute were on fire and he bailed out to die, shortly after landing, of his burns. F/O Brophy rode the aircraft down and was thrown clear when it crashed, Sgts Vigars and Friday were taken Prisoners of War, F/Os DeBreyne, Kelly, Brophy and Brodie were Evaders. This was P/O Mynarski’s 14th operation. Ex F/O Monte Green of Winnipeg, Manitoba was in another #419 Sqdn. Lancaster about 100 yards away, and as the bomb aimer in the front of the aircraft, witnessed the attack, `The starboard wing was completely on fire in seconds. The Lanc. swerved toward us and we took evasive action. We were fairly low in our attack – between 5,000 and 8,000 feet, so the stricken Lanc. hit the ground in seconds it seemed. I met several of the crew when they they escaped back to Britain so heard what happened first hand.” Pilot Officer Air Gunner Mynarski is buried in the Communal Cemetery at Meharicourt, Somme, France.

Cochrane in aircraft NT 890, P/Os W.E. Blunderfield and W.J. Jackson in aircraft NT 922, F/Os O.W. Knight and H.C. Lynch in aircraft NV 422, P/Os C.G. Berges and P.R. Myrick in aircraft NE 761, F/O H. Smook and P/O A.M. Duckworth in aircraft RD 136. All these airmen were killed. Pilot Officer Pilot Myrick is buried in the Rossebo Churchyard at Haugesund, Norway.
