Since joining the Air Force he has flown 1,300 hours in the air, he has shown himself to be a hard working, reliable and conscientious pilot, and has displayed exceptional keenness and devotion to duty. FOWLOW, NORMAN RALPH S/L(P) J15095 D.F.C. From Winnipeg, Manitoba. Killed in Action May 19/44 age 22. #411 Grizzly Bear Squadron (Inimicus Inimico). Spitfire aircraft #LF 834 shot down by flak while dive bombing the Railway Crossing at Hazebrough, France. S/L Fowlow commenced his diving attack at 10,000 feet and at 7,000 feet his aircraft was hit by heavy flak exploding and burning in the air before the 500 lb. bomb could be released. He had shot down two enemy aircraft while flying with #403 Squadron. Squadron Leader Pilot Fowlow is buried in the Souvenir Cemetery, Longuenesse, France. Addendum: – FA, Fowlow was from Hodges Cove, Newfoundland, not Winnipeg, Manitoba. FOWLOW, F/L Norman Ralph (J15095) – Distinguished Flying Cross – No.421 Squadron. Award effective 9 September 1943 as per London Gazette dated 24 September 1943 and AFRO 2386/43 dated 19 November 1943. Born 1921 in Hodges Cove, Newfoundland; home Windsor, Nova Scotia. Enlisted in Halifax 22 August 1940. Commissioned 1941. Trained at No.1 ITS (graduated 14 December 1940), No.11 EFTS (graduated 28 January 1941) and No.2 SFTS (graduated 4 April 1941). Killed in action 19 May 1944. The citation reads – “This officer has taken part in a very large number of sorties and has proved himself to be a skillful and courageous fighter. Lancaster aircraft #DV 194 was shot up by an enemy fighter aircraft, exploded in mid-air and crashed four miles north of Villingen, at Ober Eschach, Germany during a night trip to Stuttgart, Germany. Three RAF members of the crew and one other member of the crew, not Canadian, were also killed. Two of the crew, not Canadians, missing believed killed. Warrant Officer Class II Navigator Fox was buried at Ober Eschach, exhumed, and reburied in the War Cemetery at Durnbach, Germany.

Halifax aircraft #LW 209 was shot down by flak during night operations against Duisburg, Germany. P/O J.I. Hoyle (RAF) was also killed. Five Canadians, F/Os T.L. Layman, G.W. Law, J.P. Mahoney, FSs J.B. Campbell, and W.C. Downey were taken Prisoners of War. This was F/O Fox’s 23rd operation. Vinet, was taken Prisoner of War and one Canadian, FS Bell, was either Evaders or was taken Prisoner of War. P/O F. Copland (RAF), FS H.L. Guy (RAF), Sgt A.E. Swindell (RAF), and F/O L.A.A. Kilgour (RAAF) were also killed. Flying Officer Wireless Operator Air Gunner Foy is buried in the Communal Cemetery at Graffigny-Chemin, Haute-Marne, France. P/O Foy was the only casualty when, during the bombing run on the aerodrome at St. Cyr, France, his Lancaster aircraft #LM 481 had the rear turret knocked off by a bomb from an aircraft above. The Lancaster returned safely to England. Pilot Officer Air Gunner Foy is buried in the Communal Cemetery, Fontenay-le-Fleury, Seine-etOise, France.

FULTON, JOHN (MOOSE) W/C(P) 37095 D.S.O., D.F.C., A.F.C. – Royal Air Force. From Kamloops, British Columbia. Killed in Action Jul 29/42 age 29. #419 Moose Squadron (Moose Aswayita). Wellington aircraft missing during operations against Hamburg, Germany. The last message received indicated that they were west of the Frisian Islands, Holland, were under attack by enemy fighter aircraft and some of the crew had been wounded. P/O5 N.G. Arthur, H.J. Dell, FS5 H. Bryden, E.F. Monroe, and P/O W.G. Campbell D.F.C. (RAF) were also killed. W/C. Fulton had completed over thirty trips, had begun his second tour of operations and was the Commanding Officer of #419 Sqdn. at the time of his death. He had been with #99 Squadron on Wellington aircraft and was the first Commanding Officer of #419 Squadron. In Jan  of 1943 the City of Kamloops, British Columbia adopted the Squadron as a gesture of commemoration toward its native son. In Aug  of 1943 the Squadron approved the design of its unit badge and Moosa Aswayita (Beware of the Moose) became its motto.
